Yeah, its just traction control, if you try and spin the tires ESC pretty much cuts off power so you don't spin

NO YOUR WRONG.... what your describing is TRACTION CONTROL.... ESC keeps your car from slipping out from under you... which in turn keeps your from going on your roof

Iam chill, but there's a right way to correct someone without being an ass. Every forum has people like that and theres no need for it. I was trying to offer some help (even though it was incorrect) and thats what forums are for!

i thought ESC and the traction control were one in the same? with ESC on you get the traction control on and with ESC off you turn traction control off? thats how most cars operate at least and i doubt GM went out of their way to make it any different esp on a cobalt

They aren't one in the same. The only permutation you can't get is ESC Off and TCS On.

Press the button once = TCS Off, ESC On

Press the button twice = Competitive mode... No TCS, higher ESC threshold

Hold the button down = ESC Off and TCS Off... All electronic aids disabled

Beat me to it^^

From what I understand ESC is Electric Stability Control, which keeps the car going in the direction you want it to go, and traction control helps with traction in general. The first time you push the button it turns off traction, and when you hold it down it turns off ESC and traction.

They had this mode in the Solstice, which is a good example of what it does...

ESC/TCS ON - NO fun.
ESC ON/TCS Off - Spin the tires, get a LITTLE tire slip around corners
Competitive Mode - A little more fun, but it'll cut in if you have too much
ESC/TCS OFF - All out sideways action :P

Does the ESC button and the different modes affect the electric steering assist or throttle response?

I've heard competitive mode quickens your throttle response, but don't quote me on that, I don't know for sure.

I read that as well, but I am afraid of activating competitive mode or disabling the ESC/TC for fear of voiding the warranty (ala Nissan GT-R).

comp mode and launch control are all under warranty... they tested the car for it. they put it in the car. if something breaks they shall fix it, under its own warranty.
