View Full Version : 50 MPG Cobalt
bri2203 06-07-2009, 09:18 PM Lately I been thinking a buying a another and make it ahieve 35 mpg average. Thats when I stumbled on this http://www.gassavers.org/showthread.php?t=10889
Kinda make me wish I would have gotton a XFE...
I would way rather pay the extra in gas and own an SS. However, 50 mpg is very nice.
mrsilent13 06-07-2009, 09:52 PM i get 50mpg when driving like a normal person
randizzle 06-07-2009, 09:53 PM wow. he goes 45 in a 55 just to save a few dollars. i would be pissed if i was stuck behind him.

hinow41 06-07-2009, 10:15 PM With the way I drive I'm lucky to brake 23MPG
Mr.N00bLaR 06-07-2009, 10:19 PM I treat people who drive slower than the posted speed limit pretty poorly, hope he never finds himself saving gas infront of me :)
USMCFieldMP 06-07-2009, 10:23 PM Meh, I get 50mpg in my 320+whp SS.
mrsilent13 06-07-2009, 10:25 PM Meh, I get 50mpg in my 320+whp SS.
i believe you cuz i get 50mpg in my turboed 2.2....and no this is not BS
USMCFieldMP 06-07-2009, 10:31 PM I believe me because I have no reason to lie to a bunch of yokels over the internet. Haha.
However, I logged it over a couple different long distance trips on the interstate. Set the Cruise Control and let her do her thing. Got 47mpg with one tank (that was with an average speed of 75mph), 51.8mpg with another tank (average speed 65mph), and got 50.6 on my last one (with an average speed of 71mph - I was altering between 65 and 80mph, pacing a 2010 Roush Mustang 427R... or some shit like that. I posted it in my build thread).

The EPA saya the TC is rated to get better milage but there are times I wish I would have saved some money and bought a SC model. Insane mileage on the Hwy, and the whine.

2.2 lt no mods
87 octane gas, regular oil
about 150 pounds of dynamat and like 60 pounds of subs and amps and wires.
^^^^ it is possible, i didnt even make sure the tires were infalted all the way, much less at max possible press. and didnt clean my car out with all the shit inside either.

Question for both of you, this is 50 mpg on the DIC readout right?!
afireinside7710 06-08-2009, 04:45 PM 43mpg in my stock 2.2
koch1ar 06-08-2009, 05:08 PM i got 30mpg 1200mile that i spent on the highway last week in my XFE. speed was between 80-100. 300 of those miles were an emergancy
Rodimus_Prime 06-08-2009, 05:10 PM DIC is highly inaccurate
Maven 06-08-2009, 05:14 PM Ive never gotten over like 37mpg over the course of a tank of fuel, as calculated by filling and dividing by mileage. Even on pure highway runs on the PA Pike.
If I go by the DIC and reset it it once underway I can easily break 40mpg, even on my local country backroads, but the DIC isnt real life mileage, I dont care how you use it. fuel mileage is: FILL TANK, RESET TRIP ODO, DRIVE, STOP, REFILL TANK, DIVIDE MILES BY GALLONS. period. (unless youve got a loab quality fuel flow/quantity gauge.)
Ive never met anyone who got legitamately in 40's that way driving at or above legal speeds

Yeah.
DIC is highly inaccurate
Like your tuning ability?

I did. I did the miles/gallons method on my first tank that hit ~50mpg... and it was decently close... but not exactly accurate. But I DID get a good bit over 40mpg. ;)
kburgess04 06-08-2009, 10:36 PM whoever says they get over 45 mpg in the cobalt is toally full of it. unless you drive your cobalt down hill both ways of course :P. but sorry guys im not gonna beleive for one second you get over 45 miles per gallon!!
45 mpg all highway is possible. And, as mentioned, the DIC is not particularly accurate.

Dayton, OH to Findlay, OH - 100 miles... I made this trip like 6 times before I left for NC, and I averaged over 45mpg each time. Over 50 on two of them.
If you want, we can bet money on this... and I'll take you for a 400 mile road trip. $1000 says I'll get better than 45mpg.

......If only that were actual mpg!!!!!!!!!!
Actually finished my drive above 52 mpg about 30 min after I took this. Trip, mpg, and avg spd were reset with full tank in Cumberland, MD and drove 155 miles to Harrisburg, PA then filled up again. DIC mpg showed 52.4 while actual proved to be 34.5mpg, using just under 4.5 gallons. Avg spd was 69 mph btw.
This is what happens to the dic mpg calculation when larger than stock injectors are installed! Most arent gonna be this skewed, as this representation is of 60lb/hr in place of the stock 24lb'ers on a 2.4, but you should get the idea.
elecblue06 06-29-2009, 12:43 AM i got 41 on a fully bolted on and tuned 2.4 on the way back from indiana on a 700 mile trip..and 37 mpg on the way there.. i just drove and devided by the number of miles
on the way out there i got like 450+ miles on a tank and i had 12.5 used
on the way back i had like 350 miles and i still had a bit over 1/4 of a tank left.. filled it up and it was like 8.6 gallons going 70 or so both ways on the way back my brother got 42 mpg in his 01 sc2 and i got like 40.9..
Cougar 06-30-2009, 03:39 AM If your cobalt gets above 43 mpg then how come GM has not reached those numbers for highway MPG? I mean shoot, they sure as hell wouldn't be in the situation they are now if the cobalt got 7 mpg better than they claim. Gm would kill to get 1 mpg better on the model let alone 7 mpg greater. I am sorry to say but it is not true to obtain 43 mpg or higher cruising even in fifth at 55 mph.
Rodimus_Prime 07-01-2009, 09:41 PM Big words from a guy thats failed to dyno higher than me...........
Anyways on a recent trip my DIC said 42.5 but by manual calculation it only came out to 34.8, 383.6 Miles on the tank before the low fuel lights started singing to me
red06SC 07-02-2009, 01:17 PM I'm fine with ~40 highway and a blower.
Icydub 07-03-2009, 01:22 AM Wow i get 25 :(
Snakes709 07-05-2009, 12:21 AM i drove from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Edmonton Alberta (5576kms) and i got to 6.7L/100kms. I use 91 Octane plus my meth kit.
rallyracer 07-05-2009, 12:23 AM On long highway trips I average right around 38MPG going 75-80mph.
Red07SSNA 07-05-2009, 12:35 AM wow. he goes 45 in a 55 just to save a few dollars. i would be pissed if i was stuck behind him.
When you get stuck behind inconsiderate people going 10 miles an hour under the speed limit to save themseves gas...because they don't have enough sense to realize they are causing wasted fuel behind them when everyone else driving legally has to slow down for them...go around them safely and go 20 miles an hour under the speed limit in front of them to "help" them "save" even more. Maybe then they'll get the message...being considerate of others.
I have a route that I can achieve 52mpg on
but only one way :twothumbs
go the other direction and it see's around 12
lusth 07-12-2009, 11:27 AM impressive, but why is that guy trying to get him to buy a mirror?? :spam:
So he/she can remove the side-view mirrors to reduce the Cd. Another trick to reduce drag is to use pizza pans as wheel covers. You gotta admire these guys for their ingenuity.
Blue_Balt 07-12-2009, 11:56 AM To all the people claiming 45+, are you going by the DIC or are you using the amount of miles driven/ gallons used?
Highest I ever gotten was around 35 or so on the highway.
WickedSS2005 07-12-2009, 12:14 PM Meh, I get 50mpg in my 320+whp SS.
Ahem... Wonder how that happened
How's she doin btw?
whoever says they get over 45 mpg in the cobalt is toally full of it. unless you drive your cobalt down hill both ways of course :P. but sorry guys im not gonna beleive for one second you get over 45 miles per gallon!!
You sir, have not had a great tune then

Because GM would have to custom tune each and every single car. A generic daily tune for all 50 states will not react the same as a custom tune

Uh, have you broken 300 yet? Cuz w/ less mods I had 318whp and 282wtq. Same dyno that I only made 258whp on my 2.6 pulley...
cyanotikat 07-12-2009, 12:19 PM With the way I drive I'm lucky to brake 23MPG
qft. i'm at the same lol
soccrstar 09-11-2009, 08:51 AM If you folks REALLY want to get your TRUE MPG than go to fuelly.com and track it. Than come back and see if you're truly getting the MPG the computer claims your getting
09blackonblack 09-18-2009, 09:17 AM this is interesting since mine only gets ~22-25 2.2 with a catback and cai
northvibe 09-18-2009, 10:23 AM On long highway trips I average right around 38MPG going 75-80mph.
wtf...thats all too high. True drivers go 10-15 mph over the limit and get 28mpg. Why come no other car gets 50 but your two cobalts can? Vibe/matrix/corollas are barely getting low 40's barely. my bosses old escort gets 41. you two getting 50? seriously? bologna
09blackonblack 09-20-2009, 12:41 PM time for mythbusters
fakameanrepresent 09-20-2009, 02:56 PM i only get about 30-35 mpg in my T/C
souchak2112 09-21-2009, 02:40 PM i get 36mpg (hwy) in my 09 2.2
thedubsack85 09-21-2009, 02:47 PM the first tank of gas in the LSJ i had went well past 400 miles.. 12.5 gallon tank.. had a few tank's that got allmost 500 miles and then was only able to put 10 gallon's in.. 07 IRL and even stage 2 i was able to get that kinda mileage aslong as i kept my foot out it..
WickedSS2005 09-22-2009, 08:37 AM Even with a few 2nd thru 4th gear pulls, my 2.6 setup w/ 79's got an average 38mpg on my return trip from Indianapolis this weekend. And my fuel trims are still a tad bit off since the new injectors :)
northvibe 09-22-2009, 04:43 PM yeah the lsj's can pull some wicked mpg's but I question 50
I get 30 avg, inst is about 35-42 highway and 24-30 town, and don't really go slow, keep it at speed limit and pull pretty good from a stop just to hear the exhaust note, I don't think I could drive anything with less power than the SS, I was looking at getting a colorado with the I-5 and 4wd so I can haul the bike to track days and keep the mileage down on the SS, but when I test drove it it felt soooo weak, I was very disappointed with the engine output, cause all the reviews made it out to be stronger
berto 10-01-2009, 04:05 AM na i like my ss

ugh, I know the feeling. I just bought a ford escape 2.3L 4x4 and WOW that thing has zero balls. I dont think I could pass a buick being driven by a gray haired ;) its not to bad though, I have a different driven mentality in it. I usually go the speed limit maybe 5-10 over and can pull 24-26mpg in it. not bad for a 4x4.

If they slow down and then put on the cruise control they could benefit too, and an entire line of cars could save gas and help the environment. Join in, don't get fussy!
Sweetsandman 10-06-2009, 07:35 AM i get 50mpg when driving like a normal person
Meh, I get 50mpg in my 320+whp SS.
There's a HUGE difference between AVERAGING 50mpg and cruising down the highway/backroad and HITTING 50mpg...I've hit 50+ before...but my average is nowhere near that...between my city and highway driving (about a 50/50 mix) I average right around 30 mpg.

I do to, speed limit I can't afford any more tickets ;) , but I like having reserve power and some reaction to my foot on the pedal, and not having the bogged feeling when I push the gas, my minivan had more balls than the colorado I drove, so I'm gonna keep my eyes out for a newer low mileage tacoma, I drove one when they first came out and had comparable power and felt better than the 95 sierra that I traded for the balt :spam:
importkiller 10-06-2009, 11:42 PM I commute in a 2006 malibu with a 2.2 ecotec, I used to commute in a 2001 ford crown vic. The malibu gets 22 mpg and the crown vic got 25 mpg, oh and my cobalt ss/tc gets 30 mpg on the same commute. Oh and as far as people driving slower, if you drive under the speed limit you will hit the light cycles and have to stop at more red lights there for idle longer there for using more gas there for killing more trees.
car_guy_09 10-08-2009, 01:02 AM Driving like i do i get about 24.
Babying it on mainly country/back roads and a little city i average 28-29
Cruise set at 75mph for 10 hours  I got 32
