heads up display(hud)
I have seen ones that you stick on the dash and they project onto the window. Otherwise, it is ceratinly possible, but I would bet you would spend several $K doing it.
The Grand Prix and Impala SS (Caprice style) had them. Since then, I think only the Corvette has unless I am mistaken. I know for the Vettes, the front windscreen is produced specifically to optomize visibility of the HUD. So it will likely work better than the aftermarket ones you can buy.
I thought is was the coolest thing, but I have driven Corvettes with it, and you don't notice it after a while. It sits low on the window, so it really isn't much further to look down at your gauges. The tach is hard to see, and you need to shut off all the b.s. stuff it displays for it to be useful. I suppose on the track it offers some advantage.

I thought you had to have a special windshield to have a HUD.. I thought I heard my parents talking about how it would suck if the window cracked, cuz it would cost more than a non-HUD car.

It's just a reflective sticker on the glass, the actual HUD is in the dash..

I know it's in the dash.. but I dont remember seeing a sticker on the windshield, unless it was incredibly thin.. or spanned the entire windshield, because it was smooth

It's clear but has a reflective property to it on an angle..

its not a lazy thing its a convenience thing ... and furthermore it could be argued its safety thing ..if you have ever used one you would know they are a Convenient great idea ..not necessary but defiantly not pointless as your post would suggest

Glass is naturally relflective, ust like if you put Armor All on your dash and then get a glare off it in direct sunlight on your windshield. It was difficult to see in daylight even with the brightness turned all the way up, and of course polarized sunglasses would filter it out, but I definately noticed it wasn't there when I drove other vehicles, it was a nice feature to have.
Peace.
