View Full Version : Need Tire Recommendations
RocketGurl72 07-16-2009, 01:05 PM I have a 2006 Cobalt SS - I need new tires - I currently have Perrelli 4 Seasons. I need something decent for snow/ice - it really sucks not being able to get moving quickly (or moving period) at lights or through an intersection in the winter and I found these stock tires were bad for that. :ca:

northvibe 07-17-2009, 11:04 AM your best bet is to get summer tires and winter tires.
If you are insistent on having "all seasons" and only using those.. well I wouldnt recommend it. I have consumer reports and bought the top rated winter performance tires from them and I had no issue getting threw blizzards in Duluth, MN and Ely.
winter performance:
Top Pick: Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW3 H
2nd: ContiWinterContact TS810 H
395 plus 07-17-2009, 12:53 PM Wide tires on lite weight car = little snow traction. You need a tire with alot of sipes or small cut-like grooves. Its hard to find a good compromise between summer and winter for tires. I have the 205-50-17 Cooper Zeon Sport A/S ran them last winter and did pretty well and are still great in summer!
Coopertires.com for more info.
Tazmanian_Dvl 07-17-2009, 01:03 PM I would get steelies for the winter and regular tires for the summer.
I run Dunlop WinterSport M3's for the winter and currently I have a set of Continental ContiExtremeContact DWS's for the summer. So far I would recommend both tires. I know a lot of people will say Continentals are junk because they came stock on the TC and they had bad experiences with them. These are completely different tires and they are a new design which just came out about a month ago and so far I'm very pleased with them!
DaveBlank 07-17-2009, 01:08 PM I am looking at goodyear eagle gt's, I made a thread in the tire section and most people seem to like them.
shawn 07-17-2009, 01:10 PM i just bought the eagle gt's and they have pretty good traction in dry and wet weather, havent had a chance to test them in snow yet
395 plus 07-17-2009, 03:02 PM Here is a pic of the Cooper Zeon Sport A/S. I have owned many different tire brands included goodyear eagles and RSA's, conti all season, general, firestone, hankook and I can say I would take the Cooper's over any of those in terms of all around performance and handling AND yes SNOW. I am not comparing this to a true snow tire mind you, but for snow but they went great on the car with no issues. (I live in Wisconsin and we get snow last year was about 90inches + worthof it).

Tazmanian_Dvl 07-17-2009, 03:45 PM Cooper makes good tires and that tire looks like it would be very quiet on the highway as well.
I've heard good things about the new Eagle GT's as well however my experience with Goodyears are that they wear out fast (most I ever got was 12,000 miles on a 235/55/16 H rated tire) and the new Eagle Gt's LOOK like they could end up being noisy as they wear down. I don't think anyone has had them on long enough to find out since they only came out a few months ago...

thats because all the good conti's are actually from Germany. Like the TC's conti's and my last winter tire, both from zee germans.
Tazmanian_Dvl 07-17-2009, 04:36 PM Actually all I hear are people bitching about the stock Conti's on the TC's which is why I was a bit skeptical about getting the Conti's I have now but seriosuly to date they are the best tires I've owned in a long time...

bitching about what? Mine are great. Just like my stock ms3 tires, they are very stiff on the sidewalls, offer good rain driving/stopping and fairly good grip. These are street tires not track tires.

Yae i think most peopel don't understand that.
JimHarr18 07-17-2009, 05:12 PM i have pirelli nero m&s tires for my 'regular' tires, blizzak's for my snow tires. awesome snow tires, i never got around to putting them on this past winter, but last winter, they were amazing. completely changed my mind how the cobalt was in the snow. lol.
the nero's... aren't bad, but since i added some power, i will be looking into wider, stickier shoes probably in a year. spinning the wheels is fun when powering up to 70, but traction is also a good thing. lol. i think the widest the stock ss/sc rims can take is what, 245? i think lowered it's a bigger issue.

I run 235-40-18 and I'm good I personally wouldn't recommend any bigger than that or else they will be buldging over the rim and you'll be wearing out the centers...
