View Full Version : M62 Nitrous Install Going on Today at SMG.
SMG Autosports 08-13-2009, 11:09 AM Just wanted to keep some of you up to speed as to what is going on at the shop on this lovely day...(of course a rainy day, as this whole summer has been in New England)
Today we will be installing a full Zex nitrous kit in one of our customers (who will remain un-named for his own reasons). Kit is a complete Zex kit with heater, racer tuning kit, window switch, purge kit etc etc. Car currently has what is known as the "SMG Special" setup on it, with a 2.8 pulley, 60's, heat exchanger, dual pass, header/dp, 3in cold air and a Fred Jr. tune. Car made 270 whp, 252 wtq on the blower, and by the end of the day we hope to have some nice numbers on the spray.
We will keep everyone up to date throughout the day in this thread with some pics and some vids once we strap her down to tune.
freakta 08-13-2009, 11:29 AM good luck its gonna make some sick power. but more importantly its gonna make some sick tq.

gamergenesis 08-17-2009, 01:41 AM wow i cant wait to see the numbers this kit puts up. what size shot u going to use?
glen229 08-17-2009, 08:30 AM wow i cant wait to see the numbers this kit puts up. what size shot u going to use?
he's using a 55 shot to start, ending at a 100 shot i believe
jvc06sc 08-17-2009, 02:09 PM update?
mkulrey13 08-17-2009, 02:16 PM Hmm black black cobalt...dammit cant think of the guy  cool build. Cant wait to see the numbers!
SMG Autosports 08-19-2009, 04:26 PM Hey everyone, Wanted to post up an update.... So we hit the car with a 50 shot to start and gained all of that and some.
We baselined the car on the blower only and found that the car dropped power to 240-220 torque.... Scratching out heads ALOT... we came to find that the KN Air filter was COMPLETELY CLOGGED!!!!!
SO... we went ahead and cleaned the filter and hit it with the 50 shot... and saw 305 whp and 290 wtq.
SOOOOO after only 2 days of the car being on the 50 shot.... our customer got bored. So last night we decided to hit it with a 100 shot. and results were.................... 340whp, 364 wtq on LOW BOTTLE PRESSURE!!! (850 psi)
Currently the car is back strapped to the dyno and ready to make a full bottle pull at optimal bottle pressure (1100 psi)
WE WILL KEEP EVERYONE POSTED, WE HAVE VIDEO's and dyno charts to post!
Spectral 08-19-2009, 04:33 PM 100 shot on stock pistons? I hope he prays every night. Nice numbers tho!
victoryss 08-19-2009, 04:36 PM Note to self spray car:lol:
BLAZIN07SS 08-19-2009, 04:37 PM great numbers. keep an eye on those EGT's. they must be getting pretty high
SMG Autosports 08-20-2009, 02:04 PM So now for some results.... Car is running great! I know there has been alot of talk about the 100 shot not being safe for these cars with stock internals but I personally as a vet. tuner disagree if you monitor/tune/understand what is going on with the car. Nitrous users that assume that a pulley'd balt can take a 100 wet shot with no tuning may be risking alot, however a properly tuned car with this much spray can maintain reliability... and we will prove that as time goes on with this car as it is his daily driver and has run 4 bottles through the car since last FRIDAY!!!!
EGT's look great along with the rest of the tune... all the supporting cooling mods, plugs, and exhaust components are all helping that, along with the fact that the way we set this up is a step away from being a direct port kit it is keeping all the temps VERY low, especially on 15-18 psi of boost from the blower....
I know the fear is there on how hard the spray hits and is why im sure some of you fear the pistons...however, when tuned properly softening the blow on the motor when the nitrous hits is VERY possible.
...So returning to some of our results.... Our power seeking customer (Jim) who continues to remain nameless on the forum still wanted more power.... SOOOOooooo we hit it with a 125 shot...
374 whp and 364 wtq was the result. Tho not a large tq gain, the torque on the average gained very well and you will see that when i post the dyno chart up in a few minutes...along with a vid.
Just wanted to through out an update, 125 shot running strong after dyno pulls and 2 days of street use and the tune looks awesome.
damien 08-20-2009, 02:11 PM Whoa. What pulley did you blast it with?
SMG Autosports 08-20-2009, 02:43 PM car is 2.8 pulley'd
Here is the dyno chart. Rough line on the 100 shot is due to only 850 psi of bottle pressure dropping to 775 during the pull
Dyno compare on the 100 and 125 shot.

freakta 08-20-2009, 03:28 PM that is redicculous. absolutly insane
what engine is this? 2.2, 2.4, 2.0???
Benfica7 08-20-2009, 03:40 PM Fred does WORK!!! :twothumbs
c0ld29 08-20-2009, 03:43 PM judging on the numbers and upgrades he listed I'd say it was a 2.0 not a s/c 2.2 or 2.4
SMG Autosports 08-20-2009, 03:44 PM it is an 07 SS/SC.
damien 08-20-2009, 03:44 PM Didn't think stock would hold that together.
SMG Autosports 08-20-2009, 03:46 PM The stock internals can hold quite a bit on the proper tune...the key is safety and not getting over aggressive
mantiskungfu 08-20-2009, 03:55 PM I can't wait till I have some money, and I can get tuned by you guys!!!!!!!
AdamL187 08-20-2009, 03:56 PM Wow awesome numbers Fred. I don't think he'll have any problem keeping up with my car on the streets now. I'll be lucky to keep up with him.
I started a SMG customer thread in the regional area so all of us that are frequently at the shop can keep track of what everyone is doing with their cars. (trying to get it moved to the SMG Vendor section)
ItalianJoe1 08-20-2009, 03:59 PM The stock internals can hold quite a bit on the proper tune...the key is safety and not getting over aggressive
Exactly. Numbers are right in line, 04redline0124's car put down right around 320whp on a 90 shot but with less supporting mods and never had any internal problems.
Do advise the customer to not get too happy with it on the street. Pulling one gear on a dyno is one thing, spraying 2nd,3rd,4th in a long pull on the street, temps get out of hand, EGT, cyl chamber, pistons get hot, all that good stuff.
Impressive numbers still, I need to get one local guy who is about to go on bottle going, he wants to get up to a 100 shot, maybe I'll get him on a 125 just for shits and giggles. Car is stock otherwise, just intake and cat removed.
it is an 07 SS/SC.
u guys should try and push a 2.2sc see ho weld it holds up with the m62 and lets say a 25-50shot :p
tranced 08-20-2009, 07:22 PM ill be making an appointment hopefully before the end of the year I have the inj, the pulley, the header, just need plugs, belt, and $425 is it?
StockSS 08-20-2009, 07:29 PM can i please get the details on this car? full mod list including spark plugs and what they are gapped to if you have that information. what afr are you running and also what timing are you at? i would have to agree on your numbers are right on i spray a 75shot and just trying to figure out everything. is there a way you could send me your hp tuners tune file? i would just like to compare or over look it vs mine so i can get an idea. good luck and don't get too happy like joe said.
also is this guy on stock exhaust. if so badass. join in on the rest of the gang who spray nitrous on stock exhaust. lol. dan aka damien aka ssdan, bw sw 214 before he sold his car, don't blink aka streetdreamz, and myself. lol
ChriSS/SC 08-20-2009, 07:30 PM Tune wise.. I'm about to run a 75 shot (wet) w/ GMS2/2.9/2-Step colder NGKs.. I was just gonna keep the tune and modify it just by retarding the timing to 15.. Sound fine?

i was running a 75shot + 19 degree's of timing on 60's and 2.8 pulley. guy who tuned me really didn't tune me. all he did was keep stg2 timing pretty much i believe and i was running that setup while spraying through a couple wot pulls that night. i did data log it and i was recieving some knock so i realized that 19 degree's is too much timing. i am re-tuning myself now and on 12 degree's of timing just fiddle around with the tables and messing with stuff but once i am done i think the car should be fine on 16degree's of timing. i'll let u know if u remind me or pm me. i'll spray again with 16degree's of timing and see how it goes.

IIRC the car I did on a 90 shot had no issues with 16 degrees on a 2.9". Had no cooling mods other than a cobra H/E either.

Yes yes yes. That's exactly what I need.. 15-16 deg timing on a 75 shot.. Although I have the 42's and a 2.9.. The timing and knock on a 75 should be the same for you and I?
IIRC the car I did on a 90 shot had no issues with 16 degrees on a 2.9". Had no cooling mods other than a cobra H/E either.
So he had 42's as well? No 60s?
Did he have upgraded plugs?
I don't have an upgraded H/E all I have is full exhaust/ GMS2 / 2.9 / 2-step colder iridiums...
Think with 16deg timing I should be fine for a 75 then? No knock?
And I've noticed for some reason I knock at night at wot with 18+deg... Why could that be?

didn't he have exhaust and all that stuff done? GOD i wish i never bought that header/dp from you i feel like it gives me no power but maybe helps my egt you think or stock exhaust fucks that up that much? lol

with out spray i don't ever knock... with it i have when i was up there at 18-19 degree's of timing on the stg2 maps. you should be fine however you should prob just wait till i do it then i'll report back to you. lol i am on 2.80 pulley so if i am ok you will prob be more than fine. idk though i have stock exhaust idk what your working with. stock exhaust is the best and FTW!
ChriSS/SC 08-20-2009, 07:56 PM lol! I have ZZP Header/DP and GMPP Cat-back.
When are you gonna try running the 75 on 16deg? Soon?

yeah. some time less than 10 days i should be using it on the new tune. i was spraying on stg2 timing maps and the max it saw was 19degree's and i was recieving a decent amount of knock. lol

Yes, 42's. Colder NGKs, one step I believe. The H/E does next to nothing by itself, nitrous has a great cooling effect in itself. 16 degrees should be a good starting point, every car reacts differently even with identical mods.
Darkmanx 08-20-2009, 10:08 PM hmmm nice.

lol Yeah so I think I will start on 16deg for the 75 then..
Do you hook in 2nd with a 75?

Nice! Good to know then. I think 16deg should be safe to run as the first 75 shot I run then..

i have kdw2's on the stock 18's and it's the summer so it's hot as hell. it's a crap shoot. i ether get traction or a spin. in the winter and once it gets colder forget it you'll spin all of 2nd then 3rd prob or if on stock clutch and power shift end up slipping the stock clutch lol. that's what ended up happening to me.
ps. did you spray paint your orange square reflector inside your headlight or use nightshade?
