Just got my SS Sedan Tonight.... Help me mod!

Hi! Just stepped out of my 08' R32 into a 09' SS Sedan (had a kid recently)

Some may say that is a step down - but the smile of my face says otherwise! I LOVE THIS CAR! Check it out:

Okay - that out of the way, here is what i *think* should be my first mods:

1. Trifecta software (or is there something better?)
2. downpipe - not sure what brand
3. CAI (does that do anything for these cars? and what band please)
4. Charge piping - is this necessary for the 09? Or did GM fix this?
5. TINTS!

Also - I want to put a indash nav unit, who has done this and can use the steering wheel buttons still. I love the bluetooth, deff dont want to loose that...

Thanks,

thejobman

The Pioneer indash units are good, and there are interfaces for the retention of steering wheel controls.

You'll find that our controls are on the RIGHT side of the wheel anyways... not of much value. It takes forever to turn the volume up or down with the wheel controls, like if I forgot to normalize a song on my iPod or something. Reaching over and spinning the knob is much easier.

That's what she said.

Welcome!
Mods wise... I can speak from a collection of ideas. Trifecta users are more than happy with what they get through Vince. I went with the GMS1 because I want to keep the warranty but that's a different story. Downpipe is a big plus! I just got mine today from Dan at ClearImage Automotive and it's beautiful! CAI wise people have complained of more problems than anything else (cars running rich,lean,etc.). Most people have been using a mod created by ZZP, https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...ighlight=k%26n, and have better results than CAIs. Charge piping is on my list of to do's but with the recall they had on the 08's and what comes on the 09's (fixture of piping) it should be secure.
Hope this helps

depends on what you want, power, handling etc.

pedders springs for superior handling
cia charge pipes (not necessary but helps flow ONLY on the hot side, leave the cold stock, not worth it unless you are already down there replacing the IC)
intakes - i dont like any on the market...K&N drop in is what the big tuners are using
HTP custom is the best way to tune (hp tuners and having a tuner do it to your car street/dyno)
downpipe - meh idk prolly cia depends if you want a cat in it.....

Whats a good place to get the trifecta tune near Bucks County, PA? I saw a place in NJ that installs the tune for $325 - does this typically include software price too? -the link for this place: http://njtrifectadealer.yolasite.com/pricing.php

About the Downpipe: what are some good Brands and where do I get a good deal?

Also - do I need a turbotimer? I heard that turbo cars cannot be shut off immediately or thier turbo goes bad... does this apply to our cars?

Thanks!

Not too familiar with your area but here's a list http://www.trifectaperformance.com/dealers.aspx The Tune comes with a GT Tuner or a laptop cable, whichever you prefer and that's everything but shipping included.

Downpipe I'd go with Clear Image. There are other companies out there like ZZP, Hahn, and various others. I'm not a nutswinger by any means but when I see quality I stay with a company. I talked to Dan, the owner, and he took time out of his day to make sure all my questions were answered and he's a real standup guy. I just got my pipe in today and I'm a stickler on detail and the welds are beautiful and it's just a great piece. I know I'll buy the rest of my performance mods from him, charge pipes are next on my list.

Turbo timer is just a real expensive way on how to count to a minute. Just take a minute or two each time before you shut it down to let it idle and you'll be fine.

do yourself a favor before listening to anyone on here and just do research first. read through threads regarding performance etc.

i've been told that turbo timers are not necessary on our cars.. but i'm sure getting one would not hurt anything.

Your order should be
1. Downpipe, catted or catless
2. Tune + Intake, must be at same time.
3. Tint
4. Charge piping, if you must, you wont see any real big gains for the money you spend.

I have a catted dp with the stock exhaust, it sounds 10x's better! More aggressive and gives you nice pops during NLS.

I do believe your right in that performance wise you are a step up from the 08 R32
Now if you had an R20, thats a different story. But you will be destroying R32's left and right with your new little econobox

Oh dont mess with the head unit, anything else would be a step down I 100% sure.

No you dont need a turbo timer. Turbo timers are used to let the turbo cool down slowly. If you run a turbo car real hard, the turbo might warp and sieze from cooling too quickly. Think of it as throwing a bucket of cold water on your sizzling hot brake rotors after a tough Autocross event. what happens? Most of the time when you are driving this car you wont be in boost anyways, at least Im hoping your not going to be...lol. We dont need a turbo timer, these are gimmicks.

I recommend CIA for the DP, its absolutely beautiful. Other companies would be ZZP and Hahn. ZZP is the cheapest in price, Hahn is probably the most expensive. CIA is worth the money!

Welcome! Wait until you get 1K miles or so on the car. They really wake up. Go with the GM Stage1 when it comes out. You will have less warranty problems that way. You don't really need anything else. No turbo timer needed. If GM didn't put a turbo timer on a car they have a 100K mile powertrain warranty on, then I would assume it doesn't need it.

nice buy.

mods wise: Charge Piping= Dejon or Synapse
DP: I have the zzp catted with magnaflow cat. good price sounds mean
Exhaust: that would be your choice(hahn i went with) has a good tone not to loud.

I would recommend getting that dam plastic shitty charpe piping off your car. Your losing power. That rubber hose **** and 1/2 in plastic. That is just my 2 cents.

Tune wise that is going to be what you prefer. I went with and ecu from ecuoutlet.com and i am getting that one tuned and keeping my stock one for the dealer.

Happy modding

Why would the stock, plastic charge piping cause power loss? I thought the only problem with the plastic piping is it pops loose if the boost is increased over stock?

Turbo timers are meant to help the turbo cool down after real heavy use. Our turbos are oil cooled and I *think* water cooled. But generally if you run it real hard just let it idle a minute or two before you shut it down.

Mods: If you go with Trifecta, Vince will need to make tweaks every time you add another mod so that it runs completely smooth. Pending on what mods you get, I suggest you install them all at the same time so that Vince can make your tune perfect for your mods.

Vince will simply have you "data log" everything with the GT tuner or your laptop, pending which way you go, and then send him the logs so he can adjust everything just the way YOU want it.

no your not losing power cause the car will make 260 hp at the crank no matter what, its the PCM's parameter.

The boost will adjust for that. but besides that, you wont lose power anyways, the charge piping is plastic the couplers are always rubber on any car that has charge piping. They need to bend and flex. There is no power gain from replacing the charge piping, just a nicer sound and look. that crap tastic black stock charge piping is ugly but does its job effectively.

There isn't necessarily anything wrong with the stock charge piping but I've talked a mod company in particular and they said that full charge piping (top and bottom) gives about 6 whp from increased flow.
