Question How much oil should I put in my SS/SC?

Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering how much oil I'm supposed to put in? I bought a box that has 6L of Mobil1, is that enough?

Thanks

all cars are different, just look in the owners manual to be sure....but 6.5 sounds about right and dont over fill you can blow seals, im sure you know how to do the oil but if you dont after you add about 6 (have about 1/2 quart left to be added) start the car and on the dip stick you will (maynot) notice a small drop, since the oil is moved through the system then add the remaining oil (amount you should have in) then check the dipstick...not much to it

Mine holds 6.3 quarts. So fill it with 6 quarts, start and run for a minute. Shut it off and

let sit for 3-5 minutes and recheck.

Have fun getting that oil filter out. It looks harder than it really is.

No, he said that it looks harder than it really is. Meaning it is easier than you think.

****, I can't read, my bad.

Anyways... I can't get the stupid screw out for the oil to come out, it's too tight and I don't want to ruin it, I"ll just go to a garage and get them to do it.

Hope the Jiffy Lube's in your area are better than in the Philadelphia area. I've had some bad experiences. One time watched the guy open the radiator cap with the oil hose in his hand. He was looking for the oil fill.

Not on my Cobalt of course... Would only take my Cobalt to the dealer or do the work myself.

I did it today, thanks CobaltCoupeCrazy for all your help. The bolt on the oil pan was 15mm and the oil filtre lid is 1-1/4". It was a lot easier than I thought especially once you figure where to place the socket wrench and your left arm it's a breeze to change the filtre. I put in 6L in and ran the engine then turned it off let it sit for a bit like the manual said and it was pretty close to the max line. I couldn't find in my manual where it says how much, just says what kind. It's been about 5000 kms (3100 miles) since my last oil change and the DIC said I had about 40% oil life remaining but the oil that came out was very dark, also there was some little pieces of what look like shreaded metal. Is this normal? Also this is my 3rd oil change.

I think on the 1st change that is normal, but the 3rd . . . I dunno, sounds iffy to me. Maybe someone else with a little more knowledge there can chip in.

someone should have kept his foot outta the gas during the break in period...

Nah, it's not THAT big of a problem. I could almost guarantee that if all the people on this board pulled their oil pans right now, most of them would have some metal at the bottom.

Silly question for a future SS/SC owner when you change your oil do you have to do anything for the computer or does it automaticaly change the oil life setting back to 100%?

If you get it done at the dealer or any good oil change place they should reset it for you. If not you do it yourself, it does have to be reset.

Reset oil life through the i button where you check the oil life. I believe you reset it the same way you reset the trip milage, by holding the <- button. I could be wrong though. I had the dealer change my oil the first time.

A lot of newer engines dont fully losen up for tens of thousands of miles so a little bit of crap in the oil is pretty normal. My LS1's and my 5.3 truck coverd the magnetic tip of the drain plug with metal dust all the way to 30,000 miles when I would trade them in. First oil change on one of the LS1's there was a large sliver like 3/4 inch long bent in half that came out and I never had any trouble with that engine, it was actually the fastest one I owned.
