One of the members from Manitoba was told no warranty for his car if he installed the GM performance stage kit.

I put the question to GM. heres what they said.

Mr. SSnipes:

Thank you for your email.

General Motors vehicles are designed and tested to meet our standards for performance and quality, as well as all government regulations pertaining to fuel economy, vehicle emissions and motor vehicle safety. We do not recommend any deviation from the factory design and construction of our product, as these changes may adversely affect the safety and performance of the vehicle, as well as the terms of the warranty.

Please discuss legal compliance and warranty coverage concerning the intended modification directly with the vendor involved. No vendor has the authority to create or alter our New Vehicle Limited Warranty, as provided with each new vehicle.

Should you wish to proceed with a modification, we should clarify that warranty claims will not be refused simply because a modification was performed to the vehicle. If a malfunction occurs, General Motors of Canada Limited (GMCL) will require that the Dealer complete a diagnosis to determine whether the modification affected the performance and reliability of the vehicle or any of its components. If the diagnosis reveals that the failure was not the result of a factory defect in material or workmanship, but was related to the modification performed, required repairs will not be covered by the warranty.

Thank you for the opportunity to clarify our position.

Subject: I have an inquiry or comment for GM Parts, Accessories and Apparel.

I am considering GM performance parts for my car. specifically the Stage 2 performance upgrade kit for the Cobalt SS supercharged 2.0 LSJ. Will I still have factory warranty coverage?

well he did say that the dealer has to prove that the modification caused the damage. i would just take it to a more competent dealer who will warranty the stage 2

THIS IS JUST IN>....... NOW THAT IS BETTER

just got an email from gm canada hers what it sRob,

These Stage Kits are new, and we tried to get them to market as fast as
possible - because the demand has been great. Having done that, we got
ahead of some of the other parts of the process - including getting all of
our communications out to our dealers about the Kits. Bear with us - we're
getting the word out.

In terms of warranty - The warranty for Performance Accessories through GM
means that these Kits are covered under the provisions of the New Vehicle
Limited Warranty. So, in plain English - if the Kit is dealer-installed
prior to delivery or during the GM New Vehicle Warranty - the warranty
period is for the lifetime of the original purchaser, or the balance of the
New Vehicle Limited Warranty. If it is dealer-installed after the GM New
Vehicle Limited Warranty it's 12 months or 12,000 miles - whichever occurs
first (parts and labor), and finally if it is other than GM
dealer-installed, it's 12 months, parts only.

Hope that helps!

Me too, I hate how some service reps make up their own rules, now that we have an official person from GM stating that you still have your factory warranty covering any damage that could possibly happen from the kits.

Thanks so much for your research, this is one of the many reasons why I love this site soooooooooooo much! :cssNET: YOU GUYS ARE MORE RELIABLE THAN THE DEALERSHIPS!!!!!!!!!

So they HAVE to find a cause of abuse that is related to the problem in order to void the part that was broken. They cant just speculate and say its your fault and make you pay for it.

ya .. but remeber in this day of technology if it does explode (engine) the pcm (COMPUTER) records at what rpm speed and fuel trim ur engine was doing when it went.... so dont let the revs go too high or all the time... but from what i read about these engines gm sais they can handle 300 hp with no bottom end modification.. but now with this info u do have a leg to stand on i think its just that its a new thing for gm and no one really knows whats goin on... so the dealers say what sounds right to them without really knowing.

I just emailed this to CHeryl and am going to see what she says about this as well... any input from u guys on this matter?

Hey Cheryl. I have a question I have been wondering and there has generally been some confusion on in the Cobalt SS Net community.

I recently called my local dealership here in Ontario Canada and asked about the installation of a Stage 1 Kit for my 2006 Cobalt SS/SC. Basically the dealership didn't know much about the kits and got back to me after doing some research. Now I know I can purchase the Stage Kit from a buddy who aquired an extra one from the states for around 500 Canadian. So I tell my dealership this and ask them if they will install it. I am aware that the kits come with a serial code that must be called in for the reflash and warranty to continue with the new vehicle purchase warranty. However they tell me that they will not honour the warranty if I do not buy it from them and that any kits or parts that come from the US void our Canadian warranty's due to the 2 different divisions, of GM , Can and US. However most parts are manufactured in the US anyways so I don't really get the point of this. I think that they are mistaken and am looking for some clarification. I know many people that have already purchased kits from the US and have had them installed here, saying their dealerships were fine with the warranty on it. f you'd get back to me on this it'd be greatly appreciated. Thank You for your time.

Sincerely, Jess Barber.

Very Good Question.. That's what I wouldn't mind know as well..

Cause somethinf similar happend with me, with a case like this.. Buying from a different place and not getting warrenty; Although a smaller less expensive product... I got a Motorola BlueTooth for my cell phone (I have 2 of them. 1 for sale if anyone is interested).. Well my new one I got was broken, so I called motorola and because I bought this from Hong Kong they wouldnt warrenty it.. Too different divisions lol.. I told her.. Ya well I know the same people are making the ones sold here.. You bring them in.. IT's just I bought direct without the marketing gimics.. But in the end.. I got screwed.. Well no acutally they did.. lol I got a replacement lol... My own way..
