Anyone Know the history and design of the 2.0L Supercharged Engine and tranny? Ive seen it in a redline I test drove and I know its in the SS Cobalt. It looks like a german-built motor such volkswagon or bmw. Now Im sure its not a jetta motor, but is there an influence from somewhere european?
The 2L/SC ecotec is manufacture in Kaiserslautern, Germany (The 2.2 in NY, TN and Germany). The line of Ecotec engine is used on many European car, Opel, Saab, and is even used by the Aussie , in the Holden brand. The delta platform, it is the same one used as on the Opel(Germany) Astra and the Vauxhall(GB) Astra. The transmission is Fiat/GM desing(Italy), the same one used on the Saab 93(Sweden).

A little peice of paper that comes with the manual says the transmission is made in Sweden and the engine is made in the USA.

All GM engine spec (http://media.gm.com/division/2005_prodinfo/powertrain/index.html) from The GM web site the 2L is made in Germany and for the f35 trans is made in Austria.

I don't doubt that the engine is made in multiple locations.
But I have a piece of paper that was put in the car by the factory and you have a link on the GM website.
Given both I believe the paper, the GM website has been know to have inaccurate info before. such as avalible in Late Fall 2004

the LSJ 2.0L ECOtec engine in the Cobalt SS/sc is one of 3 variant in the ECOtec family of DOHC inline four cylinder engines made exclusively by GM......the MC6 5spd manual in the SS/sc is also known as the Saab F35(Saab is a GM division)...the 2.2L L61 and the 2.4L LE5 Cobalts and Pursuits use the Getrag F23 transmission, as does the upcoming HHR.
the 2.0L LSJ is according to GM powertrain consumer website built in Germany, however my car as well as every other SS i have seen has the content label listing point of origin as USA. The F35 transmission IS manufactured in Sweden. I have a call in to GM to get engine VIN derivation information and find out once and for all if the LSJ is American made or not.
The ECOtec family of engines debuted in the US in the 2002 model year Cavalier(J body) to replace both the anemic 2.2L OHV LN2 and the legendary but dated 2.4L DOHC Quad4 LD9. all 3 displacement variant of the ECOtec are designed with VVT capabilities but the 2.4L LE5 in 2006 products will be the first to utilize the system.
The ECOtec engines currently and in the future will power everything from Chevrolet Cobalts, Malibus, and HHR...Pontiac Pursuits, G6 sedan, Solstice roadster,Oldsmobile Alero, Saturn VUE, ION, L series, and Sky roadsters. As well as championship holding NHRA race cars, Grand American Cup Series Cobalt racecars and Bonneville Salt Flat speed record holders.

GM is most likely building the motors here now , since they are using the s/c
and saab is using a turbo
the eco tec was originally designed with help from lotus
