Question on tires , think about this once..

I am going to replace my tires on my 05 ss/sc . I drive mostly in the city with some expressway driving. I am happy (unlike many ss/sc owners) with the performance of these tires. I owned a 1989 Mustang with a 5.0 and 5 speed (when new) and the Goodyear Eagle tires lasted 13,500 miles before starting to look a bit "out of safe specs" and a 1990 Camaro Z28 that the Gatorbacks lasted a bit longer, like 21,000(auto trans) . But my Cobalt has 17,600 miles of "have fun but do not ever pound" miles and I am thinking of putting slightly wider tires . I do not necessarily need to go taller or shorter(unless mechanical fitment problems lead me down the path.
So my question is .....any suggestions on a slightly wider tires that will help the car stay
in the ballpark of performance. I am not looking to drastically change things. Just a subtle
change in width. Also will one size taller and wider fit the rear wheelwells ? in case I would go up one size in back and keep fronts stock hieght ?
If I do not go with directional tires rotation would be the same as on my Bro's ride (back with back / front with front). Any brands out there that support our site that should get special consideration ???
Thanks ahead to all that put their two cents worth into this.
Bob

go with a nice 225/40/18. It will fill out the wheel well a little more side to side and drop the profile a little bit. 225 will be a nice addition and you should not get any rub. If you want a drastic change maybe go up to a 235 or a 245 but beware that the fender may rub.

225/40-R18 is the best bet. Keeps the same exact size as stock so you don't have any computer/speedo problems.

225 is the widest tired you can get without it rubbing

225 is also the widest you can go on the stock rims and still be within spec... The stock rim isn't wide enough to support a wider tire properly.
