does the oil life monitor take in account the life expectency of synthethic,and adjusts itself for this? because Im swithching next week to mobil 1

 

The oil life monitor goes by your style of driving. Harder you drive, the more wear and the less percentage shown. doesn't go by miles specific. Mostly driving habits.

 

And no, the oil life monitor has no idea what kind of oil you put in your car.

 

Actually, I believe is goes by normal mobil one oil because that is what most people use with the SS and what comes with the car. If anything, it will just tell you that you have to change your oil sooner than you actually have to with synthetic.

For those of us with basemodels , our cars don't come with mobil1 from the factory.

I use mobil1 anyways and I get around 10,000 kms in between oil changes

 

mine is at 67% 2600 Miles.

will the message say change oil when it is time?

 

mine is at 65% at 2800kms and my gt did not come with synthetic

 

It comes on around 10% and says "CHANGE OIL" or something of that nature on the DIC

Edit: Also I've never let my car get that low before changing the oil anyways so I've never actually seen the message

 

I am old school..Still do it every 3k

 

5000 Km if synthetic is used. 3000 if normal oil is used. Under normal driving situations.

I only referenced Mobil 1 because the 2.4L uses it, I believe. If not, then g5mike's monitor is calibrated for regular mineral oil. Either way, it will still tell him to change it sooner than he has to with synthetic.

That "3,000 mile" oil change is a farce. It is put out there by oil manufacturers, dealerships, and repair facilities just to bring people in sooner for oil changes and upsell whatever else they can. It was kinda ballsy of GM to put the monitor on more vehicles like ours because it tends to **** off oil manufacturers, dealerships, and repair facilities. If the monitor was not accurate for the oil it was calibrated for, GM would not put it on their cars for fear of many lawsuits about how people's engines blew or ceased because the monitor did not tell them to change the oil in time.

Over the oils life it loses its ability to properly lubricate and becomes thinner when heated which in turn changes the viscosity of the oil thus allowing the meter to determine the oils ability to properly lubricate.

 

No doubt there. I am at 3000Km'a and it still has 60%.

I change mine about every 7k miles (10% oil life)

 

Thats about what I get out of mine. Mobil 1 only. I still feel bad about only changing the oil every 6k miles or so.

 

I'm on pace to get damn near 10k off my last change...I must be gentle to my car.

From what I've seen, the DIC displays CHANGE OIL SOON at 5%. I feel kind of stupid for going more than 5k miles too, but at that point the oil life monitor is still reading a percentage in the 30's, so that's what I go by.
Incedentally, does anyone know what the base models come with inside them?

I always used to get Pennzoil for my first couple of oil changes, but then I was told by a Jiffy Lube techie that Pennz gums up your engine really badly (of course he then tried to sell me the most expensive oil they had).

 

Completely false. A neglected engine will get sludge regardless of the oil that was used

I used Pennzoil in my Beretta for over 300,000 miles and the engine was spotless inside - no gum, varnish, sludge, etc. I have pics to prove it.

 

I change mine at about 60% or so. It seems to be about 4000-5500 mile range.
