Lapeer Dragway

Well I wanted to see what the Cobalt would do.

I arived around 11:30 am and they started at 12:00pm . I was like the third one to go and it was the first time I have ever drag raced at a track before. The first run I was by myself and didn't red light but to everyone's big surprise 1st gear nothing but wheel hop so I let off the throttle then back on as I shifted to second with a wheel chirp and hit third gear and the track was so crappy I didn't know where the end was . Reaction time was a .999. 60ft was 2.385 1/4 mile was 14.924 at 84.70. Second run was against a 99 TA Firebird with some work done and my reaction time was .760, 60ft was 2.547, 1/4 mile was 14.811 at 100.20mph. the firebird was reaction time of .791,60ft of 2.196 1/4 mile was 12.939 at 113.0mph. The third and final run was against a 2003 or 4 SRT Neon with a Stage 2 kit on it . It was a stge two because he had the emblem on it and the turbo definatly sounded louder. The guy trailer it and it had an exhaust and directional tires along with different rims than stock.
The light goes and I went early so I got the jump on him but his shifting from 1-2 really needed work, so I have him till about the end of second gear when I see him catch me and pass me in third right before shifting out to 4th . Last run for me was reaction .491,60ft 2.502,1/4 mile was 14.886 at 98.54. The SRT , reaction 1.128,60ft 2.244,1/4mile 13.967 at 102.72. Then as the race ended I heard like the noise coming from the clutch as if the clutch plates were hanging up on the fly wheel. At that point I shut down the car. I let it rest for an hour before I drove it home. Does anyone know what this sound could be? It went away when I drove it home but every time I use it hard it make that noise. Is my clutch going bad?

Oh I was watching another SRT neon that showed up but looked stock and he was running like 14.2 . The Neon that I raced went on to post times like 13.89 and 13.85. The only mod that I have is K and N intake. I did lower the Air pressure to 23pounds in the front and launched at around 1500-2000rpms. IS it about right for that track and what are other times people have posted with the same mods and without the performance package?

Here is some hints

3rd Gear goes to 100 so there is no need on a stock SS/SC or semi Stock SS/SC to go into 4th gear.

Lowering Air pressure helps but won't solve the wheel hop. Get a torque brace.

The Lapeer track sucks. The tree is way off and the times are usually about .1 or .2+ seconds added on the 1/4 for you so by all rights you ran a 14.7.

I would let off at about 500rpm. Do not try dropping the clutch at 1-2k. You will spin. Ease into 1st.

I kept the stock air pressure on my car and eased into first and cut a 2.2 and 2.3 60'fter on my time slip (see sig).

I'm going up there sometime this weekend. Be interested in trying again?

I would but have plans, I really don't want to push that clutch . Any ideas of what it could be.
