View Full Version : Typical 1st mod you do to your 'Balt?
\DARKMETL/ 07-01-2006, 09:30 AM I am picking up my SS sedan today. Just curious whats the first mod most of you have done to yours? I think titing the windows might be first for me. Was thinking about doing the grill change at some point.
Anyone have any idea if it is possible to replace the cloth seats with leather ones at a later date and what costs that might entail?
Allshot 07-01-2006, 09:31 AM Tint is always cool.
yallabalt 07-01-2006, 09:32 AM I saw leather covers that are made to fit that particular seat. I believe they were on Ebay.
I know a lot of people remove dealership badging.
\DARKMETL/ 07-01-2006, 09:34 AM Yeah...i hate dealer badging. My dealer had to get mine from almost 400 miles away, so I havent even really seen it yet!
BlueThunder2006 07-01-2006, 10:33 AM Well, let's see. I put a spoiler on mine (which you won't have to do) and 16's. That's as far as I got, and it's looking like that's as far as I'll go...
RaineMan 07-01-2006, 10:43 AM Debadging is a freebie mod... so I don't count that.
After that... I'd start with either Window Tint... or an Intake.
DTM2188 07-01-2006, 10:48 AM ^^^^^^I agree :)
tint, debadge, or first real mod intake!
\DARKMETL/ 07-01-2006, 10:53 AM Even if it isnt a supercharged????
06' SS2SS 07-01-2006, 11:07 AM yes!
g5mike 07-01-2006, 11:44 AM Debadge, cut atenna, then intake and catback
BlkSS4dr 07-01-2006, 11:55 AM intake
J_Rod 07-01-2006, 12:02 PM Lower It!!
alleycat58 07-01-2006, 12:05 PM Intake
BlueThunder2006 07-01-2006, 12:38 PM Intake
Yeah, if you like noise.
:p:
BlkSS4dr 07-01-2006, 12:47 PM Yeah, if you like noise.
:p:
and a bit more power
BlueThunder2006 07-01-2006, 12:50 PM and a bit more power
Not enough power to justify sounding like a C-130 in the cab.
JMO though. :)
JohnyNFullEffect 07-01-2006, 12:53 PM I'd say intake. That was my first mod. I loved it.
SSpartan 07-01-2006, 01:19 PM for me the first mod was putting heated seats in my SS/SC.
Michigan winters are insane! and that black leather becomes like a sheet of ice!
then my second mod was stage 2. then the headlights. and soon tint
gtzjustin 07-01-2006, 01:29 PM after i removed the dealer crap, pedal covers, then wheels and tires then tint then stereo then..........
M88ArRamadi 07-01-2006, 01:36 PM Debadging is a freebie mod... so I don't count that.
After that... I'd start with either Window Tint... or an Intake.
I agree!!!
im going to put ingalls engine damper for my first mod
\DARKMETL/ 07-01-2006, 05:47 PM I am sorry that I don't know ANYTHING about engine/performance mods so...Which intake is recommended, is this an expensive mod and who would install it? What kind of difference will it make? I have the non supercharged sedan.
HackAbuse 07-01-2006, 05:54 PM Get an Injen CAI....
NOW!!
cashstacker 07-01-2006, 06:06 PM first mod was tint than remove dealership badge and rear chevy badge:twothumbs
biniecki 07-01-2006, 10:15 PM First thing i did was got a DC Strut Bar, then took off the GM Badges, then got an exhuast tip, and then nite shaded the tail lights, and lastly the shorty antenna. However my next mods will be CAI and tinting the windows.
roccobladr 07-02-2006, 02:13 AM are there any mods that dont void the warranty?
\DARKMETL/ 07-02-2006, 12:47 PM I guess I would like to do the intake mod as well, will that affect the warranty as well?
black06ss 07-02-2006, 12:59 PM if you are looking at racing it at all i would suggest the driver mod first many people put gobs of power but they cant handle it. i know an intake wont make lots of power but im just keeping a few steps ahead.
\DARKMETL/ 07-02-2006, 01:10 PM No racing for me, just heard that an intake beefs up the HP a bit and better mileage too? Is that accurate? Is it worth doing if you arent really driving the shit out of it or racing it? I dont have the supercharged, just a an SS.

There has been a lot of debate about that. An intake won't give you a lot of power; the consensus seems to be that it improves throttle-response, and a friend who has one on her SS/SC says it improved her gas mileage slightly.
As to whether it's 'worth it', that's up to you. I don't drive mine hard, and I definitely don't race it. So if I did an intake, it would be mostly for looks. Personally, I'm not 100% sure I want the noise from it, but that again is up to you.
TWIZTED 2.2 07-02-2006, 01:21 PM Well, let's see. I put a spoiler on mine (which you won't have to do) and 16's. That's as far as I got, and it's looking like that's as far as I'll go...
16's?? Wow big step..
BlueThunder2006 07-02-2006, 02:57 PM 16's?? Wow big step..
Who asked you?
\DARKMETL/ 07-02-2006, 03:15 PM Anyone put the chrome door handles on? I thought about that and maybe the chrome louvered upper and lower grill. I think it might accent the chrome wheels pretty well.
LaserblueSS 07-02-2006, 03:26 PM i just ordered my k and n filter and am going to do the filter box mod. so thats my first. just if ya wanted to know. cause i dont have an extra 180 or whatever it is for another CAI.
JohnyNFullEffect 07-02-2006, 03:51 PM If anyone wants to buy my slightly used K&N drop in for the 2.4L SS, I will sell if for $20. It was my first mod and I thought it was a good buy. I used it for 3 months before I got the CAI. Still really clean in and the orginal box. PM me if interested.

The driver mod is the best mod anyone can do whether they intend on racing or not.
\DARKMETL/ 07-02-2006, 05:09 PM What EXACTLY is the "driver mod"? Just strictly say, a Injen intake? Or is there more to it? Obviously I am a NOOB at this stuff so please bear with me on all the tech questions. Ya gotta learn sometime from someplace.
Thanks.
veloom 07-02-2006, 06:02 PM Bought the car on Wednesday, installed the intake on Thursday. :twothumbs
\DARKMETL/ 07-02-2006, 06:33 PM wow. Which one? how much?

:) It's not a mod that you actualy put on your car but it's improving your driving skill. You see most people buy a car and think they can instantly drive it to it's full potential. That is almost never true though. Truth is the average person doesn't drive well at all. So the "driver mod" is really just improving your own driving skill like rev matching, smooth quick shifting, that means not just slamming through the gears but doing it with some fluidity and other things of that nature.
Your right, you do have to learn some place and you are doing fine for a newb. Don't worry if your questions seem silly or obvious because they really don't. Of course this is the internet so there will always be some joker with low self esteem to try and cut you down, but there will also be a dozen other who will truthfully try and answer your question and help you out.
Have fun modding and keep on researching.
rickyw 07-02-2006, 08:24 PM takeing off the dealer badge, rims, and tint
hondaeater 07-02-2006, 08:39 PM for me the first mod was putting heated seats in my SS/SC.
Michigan winters are insane! and that black leather becomes like a sheet of ice!

Hey SSpartan,
Where did you get the inserts for the heated seats?
Hondaeater
StreetDreamz 07-02-2006, 08:41 PM A smaller pulley.
Oh wait, you bought the slow SS. My bad.
yallabalt 07-02-2006, 08:46 PM Oh wait, you bought the slow SS. My bad.
That's kinda mean...
CarnageGKB 07-02-2006, 09:12 PM That's kinda mean...
lol agreed.
My first "mod" was my windows. Got em tinted, 20% all around.
Never been happier with em.
Next up will be stage 2 :cssNET:
StreetDreamz 07-02-2006, 09:26 PM That's kinda mean...
No, not really.
veloom 07-02-2006, 09:30 PM wow. Which one? how much?
Fujita CAI, it was around 299.
Monday the Ingalls engine damper goes on.
HickOverLOrd 07-02-2006, 09:33 PM My first mod was a new viper security system, out here its a must first mod, after that, the ingalls then intake and downpipe
SpecialK 07-02-2006, 11:47 PM Get an intake. As far as extra noise, honestly, it's not that much. Maybe a few DB, but only at full throttle will you really notice it.
Grimlakin 07-03-2006, 12:18 AM In Dallas where I am.. my first will be window tint then Ipod jack. Probably going to shy away from a motor mod until I learn how to drive this one right. Then maybe. ;)
Asphalt Assault 07-03-2006, 12:21 AM Shaved trunk, antenna, lock and sold wing on ebay.
06VRCoupe 07-03-2006, 08:03 PM My "first" mod was a combination of like 3.
Injen CAI, DC Tower Bar, Removed "COBLAT LT" from my trunk.
YoAdrian 07-03-2006, 08:05 PM Intake
i took off my badging from the trunk
don't buy an intake, for $200 it isn't worth it at all, especially if you won't be racing a lot
Geardog 07-04-2006, 02:19 PM Geardog here. The first "mod" I did to my new '06 LS Coupe was the windows. 35% all around. And for the measly sum of $15.00, I chromed the grill of the car. Of course, the dealer stickers were the first thing to go. I've got a pretty basic black 'Balt, but you guys here are giving me alot of ideas. And, also giving my wife alot of headaches!
Next on the list is rims and a ground effects kit I found out browsing the net.
BlueThunder2006 07-04-2006, 10:36 PM don't buy an intake, for $200 it isn't worth it at all, especially if you won't be racing a lot
My sentiments exactly.
veloom 07-04-2006, 10:39 PM don't buy an intake, for $200 it isn't worth it at all, especially if you won't be racing a lot
My sentiments exactly.
For me the sound of the supercharger alone is worth the price. Stock airbox is to quiet.
Plus a little extra power is always a good thing.
RaineMan 07-04-2006, 10:39 PM Looks like the first mod on my new SS/SC is gonna be a shorty antenna... I just can't stand the stockers.
BlueThunder2006 07-04-2006, 10:40 PM For me the sound of the supercharger alone is worth the price. Stock airbox is to quiet.
I don't have a supercharger. ;) All it would do for me is make my car sound like a Honda.
veloom 07-04-2006, 10:44 PM I don't have a supercharger. All it would do for me is make my car sound like a Honda.
That is never a good thing. Yeah, you may want to hold off on an intake.
SantaClaraSS/SC 07-04-2006, 10:47 PM Not enough power to justify sounding like a C-130 in the cab.
JMO though. :)
sick...
BlueThunder2006 07-04-2006, 11:14 PM I guess I'm in the minority here, but I have no desire to drive a 'loud' car every day. I've ridden in and driven several Cobalts with intakes/exhausts and while they do sound good, I think it would be too much noise for a daily-driven car. I actually have no interest in doing any kind of 'performance' mods to my car. I'm planning a few little 'appearance' mods, but that's it. I bought it to be a daily-driver and I'm planning on keeping it for as long as I can. I don't race it or even drive it 'hard'. I don't drive like an old lady  but I don't beat the piss out of it, either. And as was stated earlier- $200 is WAY too much for sound.
Again, these are only my opinions. Feel free to do as you please with your own cars; I'm just explaining my intentions for my own. :)
