Cruise Control Won't Engage FYI

This is just a heads up for anyone having this issue and hopefully an FYI for users that have not had the problem.

I just bought my Cobalt SS S/C this past weekend and with in 500 miles the cruise control died. I took it to the shop today and this is what I found out and thought I would share.

CRUISE CONTROL WONT ENGAGE
FOUND CODE: P0833. CRUISE CONRTROL INOP. RECLEARED THE CODES AND TESTED THE CRUISE CONTROL. WORKING CORRECTLY. CHECK THE BULLETIN AND FOUND FOR CODE P0833 CRUISE CONTROL INOP. THIS CODE CAN SET IF DRIVER RESTS THEIR FOOT ON THE CLUTCH CONTINOUSLY AND COULD POTENTIALLY KEEP THE PEDAL FROM REACHING THE TOP SWITCH. CHECK THE TOP SWITCH AND WORKING CORRECTLY.

Needless to say I am changing the way I drive, mind you my previous car was a 95' Toyota Corolla, so I'm sure I formed some nasty habbits since it was just a beater.

just an idea, because i had a similar problem. check and see if your brake pedal is not fully disengaging, i found that if i had to brake and then get on the throttle to get my desired speed, try and engage cruise, and it wouldnt, i was stumped but then stumbled upon the brake pedal

how on earth can someone just leave their foot on the clutch, especially when on cruise control? I bring both my feet back, touching the seat, and I just relax!

At @ 95-100 when traveling....

Big Mike, I am guessing it's when in between shifts and traffic is when I do it, when I am cruising I rest my foot and just relax

then again, the more I think about it, my dad drives with two feet and almost always rests his foot on the brake so I guess it IS possible to do the same with a clutch.

Yeah that's a terrible way to drive. I hate it when I get behind someone who rides the brake pedal like that. Annoying as hell.

Its all in how your taught. I was taught initially by my dad, and then when I started street racing, all that knowledge went out the window and I learned spirited driving. Then I learned how to drift, drive on a road course, and finally learned how to drive with -0- traction, i.e., on ice or gravel.

Well I finally pushed my Onstar button today and asked if my car had any codes for the cruise cotrol. They told me my "Transmission clutch system had a system malfunction and i need to take it to the dealer with in the next seven days." She said this problem with the clutch is why my cruise control doesnt work.

I heard that you have to be in the right gear atleast, basically keep your RPMs between 2-3,000 for cruise, I've noticed when they go below or above these RPM's, the cruise will turn off. It makes sense so try it and see what happends.

Trust me ive tried everything. Its not the button because it tries to engage for a second then shuts off. The onstar people said its due to my transmission.

Cruise Control didn't work

I had this problem with the cruise control as well. I ended up taking it to the shop twice (two different dealers). The first dealer adjusted my brake saying it was shutting off the cruise prematurely. The second dealer showed me the same bulletin posted here. He ended up resetting the clutch position as it was slightly depressed and my cruise now works. I guess I did rest my foot on the clutch pedal very slightly will in the lower gears.

Regards,
Dana

There is a switch that turn off the cruise control as soon as you touch the brake/clutch. All it takes is the slighest amount of pressure to disable crusie. My problem was because the clutch peddle was slightly depressed so the switch was always being activated.

Dana

rofl i do the exact same thing...lifting the break pedal with the tip of my shoe. i noticed the brake light sticking on a while ago when looking in the rear view mirror at the backs of streets signs lit up while im driving.

its actually quite a **** off cuz when they stick on and i dont notice everyone behind me is like WTF is he doin.

and it also doesnt help that it is second nature now so i do it in every other car i get into now too

My cruise control hasn't worked since day one. I finally got around to giving the "disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes" trick a couple days ago. My cruise control now works perfect.

I've had the cruise control fixed twice now, two different dealers. It is broken again, I see the "cruse enabled" for only a second or two, then it turns off. I will try the tip above see if that makes a difference.

I've had this code for awhile now. I'll go jump under it and see what the dealio is. It also seems to cause my rpms to flutter and not drop when upshifting.

Im having the same problem, so I went out on the road to test it out. I got up to sufficient speed, pulled up on the clutch and the brake, and tried to engage it, but nothing happened. What Im getting when I try it is that it will quickly flash cruise engaged and then disappear, but nothing happens. Any ideas?

Disconnect your battery for 5 minutes for the poeple who see the cruise for 1 second.

Mine did this, turns out if you push the clutch a certain amount of times without changing gears it triggers and invisible code (What I was told). I think it was 5 times. I'm betting most of you were playing with you clutch at a stoplight at one point or something.

Anyways, disconnecting your battery should fix it.
