for those that have their coupe tinted

what did the tinting people say about all the little dots on the top 6" of the rear window. They tinted over them and it's not sticking well. I am thinking of puttin black vinyl over that portion cuz it doesn't look to good. how do yours look???????

My tint people didn't tint the dots. I figured it wouldn't stick so I didn't even ask.

You can't really tell except from inside looking out the rear view mirror. From the outside I guess you could tell if you were looking for it.

My Cavalier coupe has the dots on the upper rear glass as well. When I had my windows tinted, the shop was able to tint over them. It worked really well. After the tinting session, the installer told me to take a plastic card (i.e. credit card) over the next few days and rub any imperfections out where the dots are present. I did so and it worked really well.

I've had no problems with the tint sticking to my back window and they tinted right over the dots. I'll keep an eye on it and let you know if anything comes up but at this point (only had the tint on for a month and a half) it seems to be holding well.

What method did they use when they tinted your windows? Heat moulded? Just curious. And would you happen to know what brand of film they used?

Thanks.

Same here. My guy (apparently, one of the best in the area) used the heat molding method. The film used was Sungard metallized film (Desert Smoke, I think).

i had mine done, and i was told about the dots, but the tint guys said there shouldnt be any issues...

anyways, i can see little spots where the dots screw with the tint, and it looks bad if you stare at it, but in most cases, its not noticeable.

I'm not 100% what method they used or what brand. If I look around the bubbles I can see a very faint outline around it but I would assume if they just rolled it on and squeegeed it it wouldn't be nearly as tight around them as it is...maybe I'll borrow my buddy's digi camera and post some pics.

The dealership tinted it for me because I had to wait longer for my car than they had anticipated so they tinted all my windows excluding the front at 17%. I believe the company that did it was Ziebart in London, ON but I'm not 100% sure. I'll see if I can find any information on it over the weekend or maybe the brand they used is on my warranty card, it's covered for 3 years if I remember correctly.

On my Gril friends Alero GLS, my friends grand am gt, and my brothers lumina euro, they put black vinyl over the dot matrix then tinted the window. If they would have tinted the dot matrix, you would see little air bubble circles around the dots.

local shop tinted over mine, using a special adhesive, after install they had me come back 2 days later to put a heat gun on it, and squeegee out any imprfections. It looks perfect.

depends who you go to. a good tint shop can tint over it and make it stick. my tint guy says 1 out of 20 dont stick. shop around when u get your windows tinted. get someone who is going to at least try to make it stick. alot of these places dont even try to make it stick over. vinyl over the back works but if you're gonna have 6 inches of vinyl you might as well do the whole window with vinyl LOLOL

Just got my windows tinted 15% in the back three, 50% for the front two and also got an eyebrow and my sunroof tinted. The guy who did mine put a vinly strip over the dot matrix, looks awesome.

Do you have picts of your car tinted? I think I'm gonna go with the same percentages and I'm curious to see what it's gonna look like..

Thanks,

I would happen to tint windows and what i did on my cobalt is sand the dots with 1000 grit sand paper to get them to lay. It works just fine. I also have my windshield tinted in 30 % and the rest is 20%. The cops love it.

I just had them put vinyl on the outside to cover it up. looks great and kinda give the car a more agressive look. there should be some pics in my gallery with it.

I asked the glass guy at work about it a while ago. He said they would use black vinyl on the matrix portion of the glass, and that it wouldn't be noticeable. I think I'd have to see an example, preferably on a Cobalt, before actually having it done myself.

Exclamation

I've posted a reply about this in another thread. All you can do is sand the dots down as best as possible and then use glue to secure the tint; otherwise you have to go the vinyl route. When my car was tinted, the dots were sanded and lots of glue was used. It stuck, but there are a few places that appear light from the outside but it can't be noticed from the inside, so I'm cool with it. My cousin had her car tinted the other day and they installed vinyl over the dots without sanding and it stuck really well except in a few places were it looked like some air was still underneath it.

Best bet is probably to sand the crap outta the dots and put on the vinyl.
