F.Y.I. G85 is a no go.
F.Y.I. G85 is a no go.
I just received a call from the GM Dealer Business Center saying that they are not going to be making the G85 package at all for the 05 model year. They are removing it from all of my sold orders sitting in the system waiting to be picekd up.
Surprise surprise.. GM is freakin retarded. Screw the Cobalt. Maybe by next summer they'll be able to produce a car with a G85 package that they advertised a year ago. By then, I bet many will have moved on to a manufacturer who actually can produce a car.

i guess im going to be one of those lucky people because my car is built with the g85 im just waiting for them to take it off hold. I know it has the g85 because i have seen the invoice and it says it right on it. Also i have a page that says all the options and its listed on there. As far as the no more g85 i cant say for sure.

Seriously though, is not being able to get the G85 package really that important?
I gotta say, it would be a pretty bad idea if GM said they were going to produce one thing and end up not doing it. I gotta raise the flag on this until I see something official. Nothing against you but, I just don't see this happening.
On another note, I don't think everyone should be like oh f it already...it could easily just be a mistake...you have no proof whatsoever that this is even going to happen.
And just before I jump off the box here, you'd rather jump to a whole nother car (which, to my knowledge doesn't come with an LSD) just because of this one part? That's pretty ridiculous.

Yeah I have been told Day after day form my dealer and GM that my car will get built. I practically had to send hate mail to GM to get an answer but I did. HOpefully thats wrong news becuase GM would be screwing themselevs really good to just screw over 1000's of people.
maybe its not GM maybe they are having troubles with getting the supply of them they need so in an attempt to get the cars out quicker they decided to pull that part out. So I think before any gets all worked up we need to go ahead and wait for an official annoucement from gm. Im sure they will have a reason for pulling this option
Hey - GM relies on the vendors to provide adequate supply of these items. It is conceivable that orders of the G85 package exceeded available supplies, so that is probably are more valid reason why there is a CONSTRAINT on the G85 package.
GM isn't out to screw anybody, the Unions and the UAW have taken care of that already!
P.S. I just took a look at GM Production COntrol and there are hundreds of Cobalt SS witht eh G85 to be produced, so if it's been accepted by order control, they will get the G85.
Take what you read on here with a grain of salt... but here is the correct e-mail address to contact the CObalt Production Team: cobalt@chevylaunchhq.com
P.P.S. G85 Includes the LSD, it's a package deal and the LSD is not available at the dealership as an aftermarket product , unless you want to pay big for the Mod somewhere else. I doubt any dealer will do it, but who knows until you ask!

well, the that started the thread is the inventory manager for that dealership, give the number a call and find out...im about to verify it with my local dealer sometime today or monday. being that i work for GM i could have gotten this car for a steal. and yes the package was the determining factor in my buying this car. but i mean, i can get a used rsx for 17 to 18 and by the time i spend an equal amount of money on it to get to the base msrp of a cobalt ss, i will flat outrun one. but hell, you can say that about alot of cars...lol. besides, ive been researching the rsx and buying one for almost 2 years now...its still up in the air until i actually buy the vehicle, but its just leaning alot toward a rsx right now
does anyone know if its the seats or the LSD that is holding everything up? i can't get an answer from anyone, i got told by chevy that its "quality control", and that its all cars... my dealer gets told "we can't tell u"... i can't believe its the LSD, as my car is built, and i can't see it being built if its the LSD since its part of the trans... i think its the seats, as it would easy to build the car and leave the seats out of it until they get them... all i wanted was a straight answer from chevy, if its the seats i'm waiting for, tell me, thats all i ask... don't tell me u don't know, or u can't tell me...

Also, like I said a few minutes ago, I'm not really sure what motivated you guys into buying a car, it's almost like you're trying to find a cheap cop out to find another car, a car that doesn't have the option that you're worried about (as in one case). Last time I checked there was more to buying a car than just an LSD.
To each their own...I know I'll be around for a while.
I'm sorry if I struck a nerve by saying I was not buying a Cobalt because the LSD was no longer available...I'm not trying to discourage anyone to buy it, I stated "for me" it was a reason not to get one. I realize there's more to this car than that, but I have my reasons for wanting it.
That said, I believe you guys have a great little car here. I also have my reasons to believe there's a lot more left in the blower than the majority here think. Once you guys start tapping into the potential of this thing traction is going to be a problem (most say it already is). The quaife is an interesting differential in its engineering and is quite sturdy. It was a steal as an option for this car. The other alternatives for aftermarket LSDs for front wheel drive cars have a lot of questions surrounding their durability and/or effectiveness. You guys that have the G85 package should feel blessed.
I'll drop back in from time-to-time to see if it will be available in the '06 model...happy driving to all you lucky Cobalt SS owners.

Well all I can add is this, unless you really wanted Recaro seats your not missing out on anything.
LSD on these cars is a lost cause and is only something to talk about having. I have 250miles on my SS and cannot say " Boy I wish I had G85 ".
If you are spinning one tire from a stop or a roll you are driving in oil. Even in tight turns a anyting but a 100% locking diff. will still let the inside tire fry.
Now remove the LSD from my Camaro SS and yes there would be problems.

Yeah I actually was contacted by my dealership yesterday stating that I would not be able to get a 2005 with the g85 like I thought. He actually said he couldn't guarantee anything about the g85 for 2006, which is understandable... but I'm sure they will release it for that year. He said that GM said they may accept my order if I dropped the g85 package, so I changed my color from Sunburst Orange to Arrival Blue with the blue inserts... hopefully it gets accepted as an '05!
