Rim Rash .... Help.

I was on my way Friday afternoon to meet SSBlondie on a patio downtown to have a cold one and relax when it happened.... I got cut off and swerved enough to "just" clip the rear wheel. All I heard was "BANG" and I knew it was all over.

So when I pulled into the market area I was almost scared to look, but despite the horrific noise, the scratch wasnt that bad. Its about 10 cm long right where the rim meets the rubber, and not across the face of the rim thank god. It will require a little more than buffing though I think... Once the brake dust got on it this week end you couldnt really notice it all that much. But it is bugging the hell out of me and has to be fixed.

Anyone know what can be done to fix this? My buddy told me that it could get fixed, and refinished. He only knew of a place that isnt around anymore that did collision work on rims.

Anyhow, it was still good to meet up and have a beer with my ol pal Blondie. I had to convince her to take the aft off, I think it was worth it

Now we just have to get everyone else together again.

"A" beer ??? I counted one...two... then I just stopped counting... heheeee!
Definitly worth it ~ and treating me to lunch (YUM) was a bonus thanks again! My 'rim rash' definitly doesn't compare to yours, I am happy to hear you can fix it without needing to buy a new rim (YIKES at $300 US).

P.S. Tell the truth, you were staring at a girl and ran over the curb...

You're rim rash? Thats just a tiny nick. I got it pretty bad all things considered.
I did a huge search on the site for info and theres really nothing on f'in up your rims.

I couldnt get the guy as it was afternoon rushhour and he got a few cars up and dissapeared. He had no idea what he had done either. It was either hit his rear quarter or take a chance up against the curb....

Last year in my Mazda 3, I clipped a huge unmarked hole that was dug around a manhole cover in my neib at night. There were no lights etc. I just saw it at the last moment and swerved. it caught the sidewall and ripped my tire half off the rim. If I would have hit that hole dead on I would have been screwed. Went after the construction company and got a new tire/rim. The guy at deals for wheels was going to send it out for "repair" until I told him the full story, then he just ordered me a new one.

I will be going to talk to him tonight.

Worst case scenario I will have my rims poweder coated ... lol

there unfortuneatly nothing you can do, beside get it refinished (GM Charges $$$$$ just for the paint) or get them all powder coated a new colour.

I got on rim really badly damaged. ( last time I ever let my father drive ) scraped along a curb.

Funny, I explained it to the guy over the phone at deals for wheels and he mentioned it should be repairable, for a price of course. My other buddy said there used to be a collision center around here that did rims too. Oh well, I will find out soon enough and thanks for the info on your experience.

As long as I can fix this for around half the price of a rim, I should be ok.
When you say $$$ for the paint, what specifically are you talking about money wise.

Were you able to get it fixed? Or did you buy a new rim? Either way , what was the price?

I was going to have the whole rim refinished myself, but a liter of paint and the labour cost as much as a new rim. something about the high crome content in the paint makes it expensive. only available through GM

Interesting enough I have come across many sites online which have shown how to fix the type of scratch I have, so it can be done. I am just curious if someone around Ottawa can do it for me. Given the size of the scrape, a high quality gun metal paint should be fine. I wouldnt have to do the whole rim, just a miniscule section. Sounds like yours was way worse than what I have. Mine is about .5 cm * 10 cm along the edge of the rim where it meets the tire. Its not across the face of the rim or deeply gouged. Its only slightly gouged but like I said, with some brake dust on there its not really noticable

yah mine needs to have some grinding to smooth out the surface.
but if yours is small enough just use the touch up paint, and you'll be OK.
min on the other hand

oh well, I'm just going to have them all refinished when I buy new tires.
I'm thinking polished face with black inside

Just got back from Deals For Wheels.
It will take one or two business days to get my wheel back to 100%
Price is still unknown, but should be around 100 bucks. No biggie, I feel way better.

I will post a before and after photo for future posters who may "run into" the same problem and are curious how the repairs come out.

I was told the same thing, until the company found out how much the factory paint cost.

they are going to use the factory paint right, they're not going to try to colour match right.

yah but you'll never get that crome shinny look that these rims have now,
if you do that, get all 4 done, or you'll never match

nothing some clear coat cant fix, thats the problem with these rims in my opinion, not enough clear on them.
ive seen powdercoated rims that have a nice shine to them, its all about what you ask of whom ever is doin it.

given the size of the scrape, even if it the paint was slightly "off" it would still be very hard to see. I saw some before and after damage photos of other rims which didnt look any harder to match than these, and they look great. I will take my chances given the size of the scratch, and price.

dont feel so bad Ive hit 3 curbs. lucky me it was the same two rims every time and blew out three side walls and one still has a cut in it. my two rims are pretty bad though, but not bent. the worst has curd mark 10 inchs up one spoke an d10 inches on the lip GM told me it was 600 per wheel or 150 to have it resurfaced

I had a guy come by the house last night to take a quick look at the rim.
It can be fixed no problem. All of you that were being over charged or the rim repair shop couldnt fix the damage should keep looking. I have seen before and after photos of some rims he has fixed. Also, matching this paint isnt rocket science from what I have seen. I saw two gun metal rims they have done. If mine come out half as good I would be happy.

Anyone in the Ottawa \Gatineau area that has rim damage PM me and I will give you this companies number. They come to your house, take you're rim, and bring it back within 1 or two business days..... My rim is costing me 75$ to fix.

$75 That's AMAZING considering what it looks like (IMO). I'm really happy for you, I know how much it bugged you
And really, it's good to know that guy's around.

Yeah, it sucks but it could have been a lot worse. My alignment is fine, and there is no structual problems. This guy has fixed rims worth 2000 $ +, and judging by his portfolio of what he has fixed, I am not too worried. I have nothing to lose anyhow.

I was also surprised at the 75$ quote. I will just drive my Mazda while my rim is gone and put a snow tire on as a placeholder. Ahh the good ol Mazda 3 GT. Its a fun car to drive too. It handles wicked. Too bad there are 5 of them for every square block. At least mine is black and not Titanium Grey. I see the titanium grey Mazda 3's everywhere. I hardly ever see a black mazda 3 gt hatch. I had to wait 1.5 months to get mine since they didnt make a lot of black. Enough with the mazda though, I dont want to hijack my own thread.
