how much is an oil change from the dealer?

Anyone know who has had it done, I'm at 1500 miles and it's time for my break in oil change! BYE OIL!

While I'm at this I had the dealer order me a new rim (weird gash and curb rash that my buddies found) and they are going to clean up some scratches on my car!! WOOT WOOT!

SO back to my question!

Don't do it through the dealer if you can avoid it. They charge something like $90 to $100 bucks for it depending where you are. Also as has been discussed on multiple other threads here, why are you chaning your oil so early? The engine is already broken in, plus mobile 1 synthetic is good for a long long time.

There is a how-to on changing your own oil for the SS/SC in the how-to section.

Break in oil change?! I just got my Cobalt a month ago, and nobody told me anything about that! I already have close to 3000 miles.

It's synthetic, why would we waste it like that?!

Well this is my personal opinion, but regardless of what GM says about the engines out of the factory, it is good practice to give it an early change. 1500 might be a bit too early, but I will be changing mine at the 3k mark. After that the frequency of changes will drop a ton.

Got my first oil change done at the dealer around 5500 miles. I only had the car one month. The month before when I bought it it had 3 miles on it. Anyways, here in AZ they charged me $75 for the oil change with Mobil 1 and a tire rotation.

Did I ever say it was free? I paid $56.99 I think. Do you think I just made that up? That would be a rediculous thing to lie about! I keep all 'maintainance' reciepts, please don't make me scan it up.

It would cost you more to buy the oil yourself. Hence, some of the oil must of been free and the labour was on the house.

And I agree. I said I couldnt do it that cheap myself. Maybe they get a deep discount on oil (Which I am sure all oil places do) or maybe the service manager 'liked' me. Who knows, but when I get home to toledo (hopefully monday) I'll post a scan of it! Or maybe I'll find a scanner here at work.

Dealers get their oil and filters cheaper than we can get them at a costco or other warehouse store. 6 qts and a filter *might* cost a dealer 30 bucks out of their own pocket. (it cost me 40) They're not making a lot of money off the change, but it's definitely not free.

If they dealer said 7 qts, it was a typo.

unless you get some great deal like this other guy, it will generally cost about twice as much as ifyou did it yourself... my dealer wants like 40 for regular oil and labor, i can do it myself for about 15...

I've learned that when it comes to syn oil, you're usually better off paying someone to change it for you due to the expense of the oil and quality filter.

I like the peace of mind doing it myself, to make sure it's done right. After all, who cares more about absolutely doing everything perfect on your new precious car, you or some underpaid grease monkey (no offence to GM techs, but we all know oil changes are more likely to be done by a trainee) that may be having a bad day?

Because if it is a chevy dealer, they would get in a lot of trouble if THEY put in anything other than mobil 1, as it voids your warrenty if you do. They have to doccument what oil they put in it. That's another reason I get it done at the dealer, sometimes you will have to show your recipts for the oil you purchse to change it yourself, if a warrenty issue arises. I rather have the dealership have all that electronicaly already.
