Ok, apparently some on here didn't like the title of the last post, so I changed it to cause less confusion
Here is a recent article offering two points of view. As you read you'll see they are VERY different points of view (my opinion: The first guy is insane!)

A certain amount of bias is expected in reviewing, but that first guy is flat out so obviously an import enthusiast.
and its pretty unprofessional to be so obviously biased.
"the supercharger doesnt add very much power"
ummm yea Ok.
Put the crackpipe down sir.

THis guy drove it around one block with out opening it up. once he got it over 4000 rpm then he would have to retype his whole article. the second guy who works with him must of enjoyed calling him out.
That second guy saved Autoweeks credibility.
I don't think the first guy knows how to downshift the damn thing. Why is the SS rated much faster than the Si, and I have never seen a new Si get below the 15's at the track. Not to say they can't, but we can run 14's all day back to back. Even when I mess up I've still gotten a 14.9 at 100mph.
I bet the Si is fun to drive, and it's another car that is tuner worthy. Can the GTI really be that cool? I guess I haven't looked into them much.

The new Civics, while they have nice power, are seriously one of the ugliest cars in the segment today. Now with the new Civic and the Dodge Caliber, is there a new trend in automotive styling to try and make compact cars as ugly as possible?! Every time I see one of those cars on the road, I throw up in my mouth!
His quote: You’d have to be insane to buy the Cobalt.
"Like, yeah, dude..."
Since when does autoweek employ teenagers to write car reviews?! That is by far the most unprofesional review I have seen in a looooong time!

+1. I don't even read car magazines anymore. Car and Driver, Motor Trend, Autoweek-they're all the same. It's like that for all american cars, unfortunately.
that first guy needs to be drug out into the street and beaten or something. how can anyone who reviews car FOR A LIVING say that the supercharger doesnt add any power. this guy is clearly a moron. the ss is putting out 205 at the wheels while the SI i would guess is putting out around 170-180. im glad the second guy had something better to say. why is it that american cars get such a bad rap.

at least the SS's are top of the heap. the GTI always has its big brother the R32(R36 if were lucky this time) that could pick on him. i do like the gti's better tho. and im more interested in that sidebar with the new tundra spied... 5.7l 350hp motor. knew theyde come out swinging
heres his response to the email i sent...
Mike,
Thanks for reading my thoughts and taking the time to respond.
First off, I'd like to say I did indeed drive the car. I also drove a Civic Si and the Volkswagen GTI, though I did not drive the three back to back. I would also like to point out that I had more notes on the car than were printed. I particularly wanted a phrase in there saying I didn't think the SS was a bad car, but that it was not as good as the Si or GTI to me. You can tell what got left out when the magazine went to press.
There are certainly compromises with each of the three cars that I mentioned. The Si is the cheapest car and I think it offers the best gearbox and chassis. The SS is in the middle of the road price-wise and it has by far the most torque and possibly the best seats if you opt for Recaros. The GTI costs the most and has the utility of the hatchback and what I consider to be the best combo of engine and transmission, so long as it has the optional DSG.
I know the SS has tons more torque than either the GTI or Si, but that made it a bit less fun to drive. I didn't need to downshift and floor it to make quick passes in traffic or fly though a turn. The SS had enough torque that acceleration was adequate without the downshift. This isn't a bad thing, but it meant I never felt the need to run the engine up to redline since there was always enough midrange grunt. With the Si or GTI you need to downshift, but the engine feels much happier to rev. I personally enjoy that kind of powerplant in this class of car. This is only my opinion though.
I know you guys love to jump on my case and say I must hate GM and I am an import dork, but in point of fact I have never owned a foreign car. I did own a Honda CBR motorcycle, but I don't think that means I have a bias towards Honda. Currently there are 3 GM vehicles parked at our house. I would love to say that the SS is as great as you and the other members of cobaltss.net think, but to me the Si is a more driver oriented car. That said, I'm glad you enjoy your SS and I hope it gives you years of joy.
Thanks,
Phil
