Onstar Antenna and other questions

I've possibly got the opportunity to get a G85 SS but of course it comes with all the crap I don't want.. XM/side curtain airbags/Onstar sunroof etc.. The price with the current deal is probably close to what I would end up paying for an '06 without the crap. I'm thinking about grabbing it. Returning a dealers phone call tomorrow. I'm curious to know what I can do, if anything, about the Onstar antenna. I hate that ugly wart. I hear you can't really remove it and if you do, you have a hole in your roof that needs to be sealed. Can I ask the dealer to remove the antenna? The XM one doesn't bother me as much as it's in the back and smaller. I don't want onstar.. I don't want it to function.. I don't want the antenna. I want nothing to do with it.

I can refuse to sign up for Onstar service upon buying the car, right? I would like to disable it as well just to be sure no one can ever do anything of ill intention with it. Would I be able to do that without screwing the car up? Maybe pull a fuse or something.. Am I being too paranoid?

This one is MSRP of $25650 and the discount price is $23,251.00. I've also got a $200 coupon on top of that. Do you think it would be a good deal to buy it for $23,051? Would i be able to haggle the dealer on top of the discount? Or do you think I can get a better deal ordering an '06 without all the crap I don't want? I would only get a base SS with G85.

My thinking is this is probably a good deal that I shouldn't pass up depsite my obsessive hatred of Onstar.

either way it won't matter. I'm pretty sure I was told GM is putting OnStar as a standard option on every single vehicle they make from 2006 and on.

I don't even want the free year. I don't want my name and any information ever associated with OnStar. I really do have obsessive compulsive hatred for it. I absolutely hate the idea of anyone being able to track my car wherever it is and have control over my door locks. That's why I am asking if I can remove the antenna or disable it or something. I assume it transmits from the same antenna as it receives?

I suppose if all 2006's will have it.. I have no choice in the matter of getting it. Can a third person confirm this?

Just as sorry as if I leave it hooked up and somebody can trace where my car is.. remotely unlocks it and steals it. I live in NJ.. any accident I have will block traffic(there are still a good deal of people even at 1AM in the morning on the roads here) and somebody will get some police if nothing more than to clear my wreckage out of the way. If I am concsious, I'll have a cell phone. So.. I'm fairly certain I'll be just fine without it. While I'm ranting, I don't like side curtain airbags either. Or any airbags. They are mainly for people who don't wear their seatbelt and help obliterate your car from a 15mph fender bender. It costs thousands to repair a car after all the airbags deployed from a minor accident.

I've already been in a near fatal accident several years back in an old Camaro. Ripped the font end of car right off. Seatbelt was all I needed to keep me alive. I didn't break my nose from any airbag deployments. My face and head were just fine minus an injury sustained on the BACK of my head. Nobody knew what did that. The seatbelt fractured 5 ribs, severed my collar bone, and cracked my hip. They are affective in holding you in place let me tell you.

Now, back to the topic at hand here.

I did a little reading, it seems if you find the Onstar computer box you can just disconnect one of the connectors. Does anybody know where that is in the Cobalt? I think I read a post here that it was near the rear deck somewhere.

On star is good , the emergency service is great... as for knowing where you are... you talked about your cell phone right??? you know thats just as traceable as onstar?

Good info... as for being traced... do you deal with hundreds of pounds of drugs??? otherwise why the hell would they waste their time.. weigh your options the smart way man... there was jsut a story on here abotu a wreck... onstar saves lives, no other way to put it, when you buy a car thats made to go fast take whatever safety you can get

Ya know what man.. Last night I went down the dealer, quit being an anti-onstar *******, got a decent price and bought and drove out the Arrival Blue Cobalt SS w/ G85 package and I'm happy as can be now! I still think the OnStar antenna is ugly.. and if I had much choice, I could live without OnStar, but I didn't let that stop me.

Now I will fill everyone in this winter on how affective or ineffective the LSD is in the snow.

While GM did make a nice car here, I'm still a little irriated at them for botching the release so badly. I just got lucky with finding this one at a dealer. Otherwise, who knows how long I'd be waiting.

There's a way to disable the onstar unit, I think all you need to do is find the lead going to the antenna inside the car, and cut it. Just never call em to unlock your car.

Yes.. I read if you find the silver OnStar computer box, you can just disconnect one side of it.

ONSATR is good just leave it all alone... there is a reason why the largest auto maker in the world is going to make it standard on ALL cars...

Onstar and all of its features, GPS, OBD2 diagnostics, Cellular calling, auto unlock , theft tracking, and Accident notification can be easily defeated without damage or detriment to any other system in the car....PM me for instruction...as for the antenna....obviously you can remove it but you would have to fill the hole in the roof.

"Who will help get our car back when its hijacked and my little brother is inside??" That is the singlest dumbest commercial Ive ever heard before....what the f*ck was your little brother doing in an unlocked running automobile all by himself???

"who will tell us if the check engine light is nothing to worry about or if we need to go to the dealer??""

Umm I thought that was my job....now weve got people ignoring there check engine lights because OnStar said it was okay....

Airbag deployment notification is fine but the new Advanced Automatic Crash Notification is a diff thing altogether....it alerts OnStar after it senses "predetermined forces" whether or not the airbags depoly....Guess what...Even as a dealer Technician I cant find out what the parameters are for the predetermined forces.....

Do you really feel like getting "Service Car Now" letters in the mail because OnStar determined your car has a failure??? Maybe your new S/C pulley, or cat delete pipe and O2 simulator set a code. Do you want OnStar knowing about that???

Dont get me wrong I am all for safety , my wifes car has OnStar.....but everyone needs to get off the OnStar Propaganda Wagon and take a closer look at whats going on.....

Just in case you were wondering, GPS Location , Wireless Communication , and Onboard Diagnostics linked together is known as OBDIII.....it got voted down recently, buT GM has been building cars equipped with it for years.....dont think the Gov't doesnt pay att'n to how well it works/how many people use it....and when every retail sold car/truck GM makes will have it as of 2009.....makes you think.

Nope I don't need my car hooked into the Net so when someone decided to come out with a worm/virus for Onstar my car doesn't kick the digital bucket.

Also the antenna couldn't be uglier.

onstar

My last car, Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, had an Onstar in the trunk. I had it disconnected and removed from the car for several days. So the answer is yes, just unplug it if you don't want to use it and all will be ok.
