Anyone See These New Pistons Yet?

I work at a autoparts store and we get a Jobber News magazine every month and in the new products section there is a Mahle 8.5:1 piston kit. They are forged from 4032 aluminum alloy. It says they are for the Redline, Cobalt and Saab's 2.0l Turbo. Have you guys saw these yet?

Thats a pretty low compression ratio. Definitely designed for higher boost levels.

It says that because the Saab's 2.0l is turbo. In my magazine from work it says supercharged Cobalt, Ion and the Turbo Saab.

It's all the same motor dude. Regardless of the means of F/I, it's the same motor. And he also doesn't say Redline and Cobalt Turbo, he says SAAB 2.0T. Don't confuse this with the Sky motor, which the pistons should still fit anyway.

I wish I had your mechanic skillz dude. I'd love to have some low CR forged pistons and a set of forged rods, but damn if I could pay the labor or do it myself.

I believe a guy on here popped a stock piston at like 22 psi.

No. But it sets the engine up for bigger boost.

No. In fact they will take power away. However, they allow to make more boost without preignition, so in combination with a higher PSI, you can make more power.

A certain compression ratio with a certain octane gas can only do so much boost before you run into knock (preignition). A lower compression ratio allows you put off knock a bit and make more power before the problem comes back again.

Normally aspirated = High compression ratio
Forced induction = Low compression ratio

I"m planning on going all turbo soon... and that low price just helped my budget for a better turbo.... plus with 8.5 comp I"ll be seeing around 28 psi no problem... sweet..

I'm surprised there's not more people interested in these.

cracked it at 24 psi, but that was only because coolant leaked in when the head gasket blew.

yep i'm ordering a set of these when i get home today, i was holding off on buying those diamond pistons cause i thought they were overpriced, these new ones seem like they are reasonable.

i might go ahead and have the block bored out .5mm and buy the 8650's

<edit>.... umm it only gives us 0.02 liters of displacement maybe i'll just buy the 86's and spend the rest of the money elsewhere

you would do somethingg like that if the engine was in need of a rebuild and you were remachining the bore anyways. since you have to remove metal to smooth it out, you add half a mil of bore and then there you go.

i'm planning on going with hahn for the twin charge set up and an intense stage 5 kit do you think these pistons will handle all that?

pistons don't break because you're pushing too much boost, pistons break when you push too much boost and the fuel system can't take it. you'll either get preignition, dieseling, or maybe blow a head gasket and roast them with oil or coolant. it's not that there was too much boost.

now, you MAY throw a rod or cook a bearing because of overboosting... most likely from hitting the rev limiter hard. but the piston will probably not be what fails you.
