Anyone out there notice a low whine when they're really taking off? I have an 06 ls still stock and I've heard it coming from another balt as well. I just checked the air box and am about 95% positive that I have air injection. Was wondering if thats possibly what is making the noise? Any input would be great.

 

I hear a "Whine" my buddy says it sounds like I have a turbo. I dont have air injection and thats a fact. It could just be the air sucking in through the snorkel? I have no idea

 

Well scratch the air injection off the list of possible noise makers. BTW what added benifits does one get from having the air injection assuming there are any at all?

 

None at all, its simply for emissions reasons. Yes it sounds cool but does absolutly nothing for performance

 

when does the sound come...i drop mine to 1st gear and red line it..it sounds like i have a bov when hittin into second gear off the overdrive

 

...rev limiter? you really should never go into first gear unless your stopped

 

I get that whine too when I drive my dads 2.2L Ion. I've been wondering what that is too.

 

Thats your throttle body closing and the air making a sucking noise trying to get in.

If you floor it, hold it all the way til the end, then let off the gas mid-shift, it'll do it

i got a whining too its my supercharger lol jk i never heard the 2.2 before so i wouldnt know

 

i get that bov like sound it sounds kinda kewl could fake some people out

 

i do it only when i race from a dig..duh..it scares some other ricers...then wait i still kill them...lol

My cobalt makes this 'whine' sometimes as well when im hammering it. I'd have to +1 about the tranny claims. Not sure if its from the tranny or the throttle body that HackAbuse was saying.

no its not bad, but some of you are getting caried away, the tranny makes the noise when you slowly raise your rpm's... not when you floor it if you drive slow and dont shift that is when you get that noise....

 

So the air injection is for emissions only and does nothing for extra power. I can sort of understand that but is the air cooled before it hits the air box or is it still hot? And if hot isn't that a bad thing?

 

It simply pushes fresh air throught the exhaust manifold so the exhaust air isnt as "dirty", and it dosent matter if its cooled or not, it simply gets pushed out with the exhaust

 

yeah my friends 2.2 sounds like he has a turbo spooling at high speeds but my 2.4 whines once in a while, no turbo noise at least from what i hear driving it

 

Oh, I thought the air injection came from the exhaust to the intake not the other way around. My bad. Wow don't I feel smart. BTW I definatly hear that sound when I floor it and not when driving slowly at high rpm's. Not trying to start anything thats just my observation.

I've heard my Auto Tranny whine when I'm coasting before, but only when I'm coasting. I've never heard a whine when accellerating. And yes I know this is about a Manual Tranny. But I thought I would throw in my .02

 

Mine will wine too a high RPM.

 

There is a TSB for the whine when the AC is on. We had it in the wife's HHR.
