I'm not going to vouche for the SS but it sounded like all he did was spin, plus this is an 1/8 of a mile track, not a 1/4 mile track. Worthless results. Many cars that we would otherwise beat CAN beat us in the 1/8 but not the quarter.
Of course if the Mazda is modded pretty well to shoot out of the hole like that then yes I can see him winning. Protege's basically run low 15's high 14's so he beat the driver and not the car..unless highly moddifed to do just that, beat the car.

i beat my friends protege all the time in my 2.2L LS...we dont even bother racing anymore unless were racing on the freeway....car dodging makes things more fun..gotta choose which lane to switch to...if u get stuck behind a slow truck.. GG heheh (course i dont do this very ofte at all...kinda freaks me out...hit 106 on the freeway with him once)
they're like 130hp stock... i could imagine "light" mods being anything from i/h/e to a bolt on turbo kit (was made for the 2.0). anyways, i've owned one, it was a good car, pulled pretty well for it's power level... hard to say whats going on really.

No n/a Protege is going to touch 14s stock, and probably not 15s either, although I suppose it's possible.
that vid has been out for a while, i played witha mazda speed version yesterday... he was riding my ass my like a lil bitch, then he tries flying by me............................................... that ummmm.....didnt happen
I had a turd at work with a 2.3 Mazda 3 hatch... thought he was the ****... HE THOUGHT WRONG! I whooped his asssssssss! So the SS/SC obviously did not know how to f'in drive, or the Mazda was a little more than "lightly modded!"
by the way I was refering to the Mazda speed Protege. The Mazda Sped Protege is a 2.0L....with many power adders such as intake, exhaust, header, manual boost set, proper tuning and sticker tires they can hang with a STOCK SS/SC. When I was stock I raced one from a dig and it was dead even until about the middle of third gear.
