Wheel Hop causes Clutch Failure

GM has a tech bulletin out that comments on broken axles being caused by wheel hop. It also say that the wheel hop can cause a crack in the case which can cause fluid to leak onto the clutch and cause a slip. They are making changes to reduce the wheel hop issue but not until 08.

It also says that this is an abuse issue and is not to be covered under warranty.

Just A FYI for everyone.

Figures....GM is always trying to weasle there way out of paying for something!!! It kills me how they sell sports cars but the minute you get on it, "your abusing it!" What the hell is the point of buying these cars if they give you crap 24/7!!!!! Sensitive subject from experience.

The thing that kills me is they know it's a problem and they are "fixing it" on a later model. But it's not covered under warranty. So if they know it's a problem and they are taking the time to fix it, how the heck is it not covered under warranty? That just kills me.

Not really surprised on this. Blame it on us that they are making shitty products. That's ok because I think I have finally fixed most of GM's weaklinks so start making some real power!

I am always worried that something might happen to my axles... they always make this a popping noise when going forward when the car has been sitting for a while. I brought it in for this noise like 3 days after I bought it and like 4 times after that so if anything happens I'd like to see them TRY and talk their way out of not covering it under warranty.

Is there someway to sue GM and put them out of business, or maybe just take their business away from them and have it run by all of the cobalt members on here!?!? lol

I've had it for a couple months and I've already put 4,000 miles on her, I just drive to and from work. I've noticed a click every now and then, seems like it's getting worse. If I'm not driving to work then my kids are in the car so I really haven't even raced anyone yet. I have in no way abused the car, no wheel hop at all for me. Just a stock car with Stage II and exhaust (I just wanted 12 PSI like you guys at sea level).

well, i'd make the claim that if you are launching the car and get wheel hop and break an axle, that's really not a GM issue. the way i'm taking it is, that they're designing a stronger part so that it's harder for owners to break something.

if you blew a rear in a corvette, or viper or ferrari, do you think it would be a warranty repair? nope, same in this case.

I understand this, but when more than a handfull of people are having axle or clutch problems on stock cobalts and "claim" they aren't abusing their cars, there has to be something wrong.

Not true, I blew out my rear on my turbo 02 SS Camaro and GM rebuilt it for free under warranty... and thats with 505 rwhp. I've known a couple people who have blown up their motors with aftermarket turbos and GM has replaced 'em fee of charge.

All you have to do is be honest and not act like a punk ass kid. I guess when you walk in with a white shirt and tie people treat you different.

This is why I plan on taking the car into the dealer now before it gets worse, if they can see things starting to wear prematurely now that's better then a year form now when it's towed in with a cracked tranny case, busted axles, and a blown diff.

My clutch isn't slipping but it does hesitate going into second and my CVs are clicking.

dealers suck. im fighting with one just to reset my check engine light. They said the codes its throwing when they check there is nothing wrong with them. They say its cuz i got a dvd player and an aftermarket alarm but when i take those out the codes are still being thrown adn they still wont fix it

I've never hard launched my car at all. I never get on it at all until second gear. Like I said, the clicking has happened since I got the car. I noticed it slightly right away and it has gotten slightly louder and louder. I have a nice long service history for the same problem since I first bought it, so if it breaks I can say - see I told you when I first bought it that it wasn't normal. Then they will have little choice but to warranty it unless they want to face a lawsuit they can't possibly win.

I have the clicking also, usually when first moving off or backing out of my driveway, or sometimes when shifting or letting off the gas while in gear. Anytime there is drivetrain lash, I hear a small, sharp click. Sounds like a CV joint, but the axles on my car are nice and tight, i think it is in the diff itself. People with the click, do you have G85/LSD or not??

My friend and I have this problem. I don't have g85 neither does my friend. But I don't think this is a bad sound. I think it's common to hear this sound. There was a couple of threads on this I belive and it doesn't have anything to do with the cv joint or axles. I forgot what it was though.
