is modding my car a waste of money.

i'm going to be getting a ss/sc in a few weeks. The past two cars i've owned i've modded (like rims, springs, tints, stereo's, tints, projectors, exhaust) But then when you go to sell the car you lose all that money that u just invested into the car. I'm going to be the ss/sc soon and i really want to modd my car but i'm also at that the age where i really want to start saving up for a down payment on a house. What do you guys think?

the good thing about getting a SS/SC is that you dont really need to mod it, i've modded all my paast cars and i have been happy with my SC for the last three months

I never put any big money into my Cobalt. I put some little things on it but that is about it. At the end of the day, it is still a Cobalt.....

If the goal is to by a house then don't mod save money. There will come a time for toys after the house. When you can afford to mod the mod the car you like as I totally disagree with thedak . The Cobalt is what you want to make it.

yeah Victory_red_SS will be out running corvettes. and at the end of the day is that JUST A VETTE? sounds like thedak is in the wrong hobby or is going about his totally wrong. If u dont plan on having a nice car. theres no need in getting on a car forum

How do you define waste of money ? If you are doing it as an investment then YES.
If you are doing as a hobby and for increased enjoyment of your ride then NO.

A modded car is a toy for adults. The toys that fetch top buck the week before Christmas can usually be found at the spring garage sales for 10 cents on the dollar. In most cases
(not all) a bone stock car is worth more money then a modded one when it is time to sell.
You may bring back a fraction of the cost of parts you put in, but the time you spent doing the work is gone. If you want to save money for a house, find a cheaper hobby for a while.

Good luck

That's why you part out the car when your ready to sell. IMO car moding is not a waste, i have already had 4 cars and iam 19, i love cars period.

well.....i look at it this way and totally different from everyone else....unless you plan on seriously modding your car (like victory red) you may only spend a few thousand on it and it's easier to pay it now with no other major bills. Unless your financial situation is gonna take a serious upturn, it's better to go ahead and do your mods now, than to wait for later. You're gonna have repairs, groundskeeping, gas, lights, mortgage, phone bills, cable/satellite, car note, think about it. Get ALL your toys now and then get the house.

Quickest way to wealth is to buy a house early.

Wow you are mistaken.....if you would rather have an 11 sec cobalt over a lower 12's corvette then I think you are going about this totally wrong. Modding a 2.2LS cobalt really is not worth the time and effort IMO...unless like someone said, it makes you happy. A vette is a vette and a cobalt is a cobalt, just because a cobalt is faster than a vette doesnt mean that the corvette isnt a **** ton nicer than a cobalt.

Wow Dont listen to this guy, He probably still ives with his parents at 40, Invest in your house man, in the end youll be happy you made the right decision, Btw he didn't list the problems that go wrong with cobalts when you mod them, They break on their own they dont need you to abuse them even more. Besides that 500 dollars you thought it would cost you turns into more money for repairs or having to sell your car and buy one that isn't falling apart.

I have bought a house, and I still mod my car. The mods don't come as quick now, and I actually have to save longer, but I wouldn't give up my house for mods. A house is a great investment right now. A car unfourtanely is a bad investment. Modding a car for pleasure and joy, to me, validates spending the money on the mods. I've been told by all sorts of people that don't understand, that I waste my money on my car. That is what makes me happy though, and I don't get on them about smoking or chewing or whatever they do for hobbies. Oh, and having a vette is nice, but having a sleeper Cobalt that could smoke a vette is priceless! Go Victory for taking the strides toward that goal!

Jus all depends on what type of person you are man . I realize cars are not an investment and moding them is certainly not either ....but cars are what makes me happy , making them go fast makes me happy . So as long as I stay with my financial means , I dont think about the $$$$ aspect at all . When u do go to sell , like shortbus said ....part out the mods and return the car to stock . I had so much cash into my trans am vert that I parted that car out all the way down to rolling chassis and sold the body with complete suspension and interior . I made out pretty well doing that . I coulda got no more than $13-14K for it complete , but parted out when all was sold off I made close to $20K .

So stay within your means , mod away and have fun .

its kindof a waste of money. its a hobby to most people. and thats what hobbys are...waste of money, BUT it makes people happy and keeps people busy so thats whats makes it worth it. unless you plan on going to events like autox or racing and stuff then you can win money and get sponsored and maybe become more than just a hobby.

I know after I got rid of my modified Cavalier I said I wouldnt modify the Cobalt. Yah that lasted about 1 year. Some times its an addicition, rather than a hobby.

WOW!!!! didn't expect people to blatantly disrespect me about this, but if you only need approx $2500.00 EX. for mods it's a helluva lot easier to get it saved now than when you have just purchased a home. I'm not saying you shoudn't purchase your home but, if you want to do some mild modifications you prob could place your home on hold for only a few mos wheras you might have to put your mods on hold for a much longer time if you have already purchased your home.

I would rather have a 4 cylinder beating a V8 than a V8 beating a 4 cylinder. imagine the look on the guys face that Victory beats. he wont like his vette to much after that. a 4 cylinder is supposed to get beat by a V8. its expected. and if it doesnt happen. that V8 is embarrassed. IMO

There seems to be a lot of insecurity around lately. There is always something faster, faster than that SC Balt and faster than that Corvette. How do you think people in a viper feel when they get beat by an SRT-4, who cares? I stand by my comment, I would rather drive a brand new z06 than a cobalt that could beat it.
