Neon tubes give a glow effect, looks nice. I personally have Blue LED's on my Lancer, they are more descrete from my POV, and they seem to be more focused than the neon tubes. i.e. the LED's have a distinct bar shine on the ground, where the neon tubes disperse more evenly. downside to neon is they are fragile, LED's are way more durable.
Just some info from experience.

Well, technically LEDs and wires aren't really neons. Only neons are. And with that, only the orangish-red ones are actually neon. The other colors are produced by miscellaneous other neon gasses.

(Just trying to educate the world as to a little bit of electronics and electrochemistry, my personal crusade).

That being said, for under-car lighting I far prefer discharge tube lighting. So, regular neons it is .

I assume of course, that you were talking about under-car lighting. The other types of lights (LED & EL wire) are great to use inside the car.

I'd have to agree with tiny on the interior, cathode tubes are alot more intense light, for underbody, led or neon are both good choices, look at other cars if you can to see which you like best, and also the leds are more durable, if you get some of the better uunderbody neon they are warenteed from breakage as long as the outer casing is intact, I know that goes at least for Streetglow's GoldLine.
