Projector Question

Okay, I know some of you came into this thread with the intent to slam a newb with the "Please use the search button" reply, but let me cut you off right there. I have searched on this already (I've been a member for a pretty long time, but I usually just read what others have written, and have almost always found what I needed). But here's a question that I cannot find the answer for:

Has anyone tried removing the LEDs from the projectors? Not the ones in the halos, but the three LEDs right above that (the white ones). How hard are they to access, and are they just a normal LED (like the $0.22 kind that don't even have a housing except for the lens and two leads), or are these LEDs special looking in any way?

I think it would be cool to replace them with amber LEDs and then wire them up to the turn signal/DRLs. It's just a thought. Amber all the way across on the top would look pretty good in my opinion. I'm thinking about getting a set and trying this out. It would be cool to get the LED tail lights at the same time, but not sure if I want to drop that much money on something that I've still not actually seen on anyone's car.

Thanks.

Okay, I'm sorry if that first part made me sound like a douche, but I'm really a pretty nice guy.

I cant answer your question, but I will say that it would look a lot better since the blue/white ones don't flow at all. That and the fact that nobody gives a straight answer on whether or not HID actually fits in the housing are the only reasons I haven't purchased them. I hope your idea works.

I agree, the reason why I didn't get a set for my car is due to those blue/white LED's at the top. I'm just not a fan of them, but hopefully someone can answer your question and you replace them. I'd like to see what they would look like then.

If I ever get get a pair, I'll probably investigate it myself, unless someone else does first. The reason I'm not sure if they are just normal LEDs or not is because of the fact that they seem pretty bright from almost any direction (at least from the pictures I've seen). Normal LEDs usually have a pretty crappy viewing angle, and you have to be almost directly in front of them for them to be bright at all. It also kind of looks like they have some sort of little reflector that they are bouncing the light off of. Maybe I'm wrong. But this is why I asked, I guess.

Even if you can't answer my question, I'd love to hear what others have to say about the idea of replacing them with amber LEDs. Do you guys think it would look good, too?

I would definitely buy some if you could figure out what kind they were. When you say "square" LEDs, do you mean those new cluster LEDs? Those things are pretty awesome. That would make sense why they have a wider viewing angle if they were clusters.

the white goes with HIDs and YES they do fit the housing, you just need to make some adjustment ( Play with the wires on the back cover of the projector) the rest is easy
took me 30min to install my HIDs

Hmm... maybe I should look into that instead of changing those LEDs, if they match so well...

Thanks.

I've had problems with my LED turn signals burning out (just normal 3157 LED bulbs). I read that this is common for our car, something about small power fluctuations to the running lights that burns out LEDs really fast. I wonder if there is anything that can be done about this. I thought they were supposed to last past the life of the car...

Excellent! Although I would still want to change the LEDs to amber cause either way, I am not a fan of white/blue turnsignals/running lights. I use to love them, but after having 12000k HID(Insanely purple) on my cavalier and using amber turns, it just looked so much cleaner imo. To me, amber turnsignals give it more of a european luxury look when combined with HID. With the cobalt, I think Im actually gonna go yellow turns and yellow fogs combined with HID. Anyways, thanks for the info!

Well, HID runs cooler than halogen (35w), so I don't see why they would melt anything. second of all, what the hell are these lenses made of...last time I checked, the lenses should be made of glass...at least the lenses on my old ones were and so were the audi ones I retrofitted. These projectors honestly sound like their build quality is poo.

Wow, you were right about the LEDs being the same color temp.

Mkulrey, if you start carrying that type of LED in amber, I'll definitely buy some from you. I bet others would, too.
