Wow...My Trade in value SUCKS!!

So I saw an 06 SS/SC for $2000 under sticker price at a local chevy dealer for the Red Tag Sale so I took it for a spin while they appraised my car. I have an 06 Base LS Cobalt Coupe w/ no options...8200 miles. I paid $12900 for it 5 months ago and all they will give me for it is $8700!!!! I was expecting it to go down but not that much!! Maybe to like $10000...So I guess I wont be getting an SS/SC this year....

you might be able to get them to come down on the price the other 1300 or negotiate with you on the trade in. My favorite line is "what will it take for me to sell you this car".

I had to to go work when I left but he said he was going to call me back between 8 & 9 w/ a better deal. They may have sold it though, they were pretty busy. The other Chevy dealer near me had 2 of em that i was planning on test driving this morning but they sold them both yesterday.....Both loaded w/ the exception of Onstar out the door for under $20,000!! Should have gone there first...

Wow, I was not aware that they would depreciate by that much. What dealer did you go to? I would try a different one and see if the outcome is the same, and hopefully they have an SS/SC available. Good Luck...

I went to Sutliff - in Harrisburg. They tried telling me that because they were already giving me $1997 off for the Red tag sale they couldnt give me a better trade in. Im going to call them today though and see if they came up w/ a better deal. I'm not really sure Im ready to buy at this point but I mainly just wanted to test drive one since I hadnt yet....so unless they give me another $2500 i wont be taking it home.

I continue to wonder why people don't get the car they really want the first time.

BTW Keep in mind, if they do give you 8700 for your car, they will probably turn around and sell it for 11,000. After all, its practically brand new!

We were buying another house and i needed a car....didnt want to go 24000 in debt right before i bought the house...didnt know how a bank would look at that, so i got the more economical one.

Its true that when they have events like the red tag sale it is hard to give more for the trade. The dealer makes very little on the car itself so they try and make money on the trade. 8700 sounds about right to me.

No way will you get another 2500. That means they are giving you 11,200 for trade in! We have a loaded Cobalt on our used car lot for less than that right now. They have to run your car through inspection, Certify it, and pay to advertise it all before it ever goes on a lot.

I purchased my car back in May @ Sutliff, and then bought a house 2 Months later. At the time I wasn't sure how it would work out with the Bank and all, but it's been great, and I don't regret making the decisions I did.

Did you check any of these other local dealers to you:

Mechanicsburg - Lawrence Chevrolet
Camp Hill - Forbes Chevrolet, INC.

If you don't mind taking a ride there's:

Carlisle - Rufe Chevrolet INC
Dillsburg - Lefever Bros., INC.
Hershey - Chevrolet of Hershey
Manchester - Thornton Chevrolet
York - Apple Chevrolet

Just a thought.

Lawrence is where i bought the one i have now....and lefever brothers had 2 but sold them. Its ok, my plans were to keep this one for 2 years anyway and then trade in an a leftover 08. I def wish i would have gotten the SS/SC instead of the LS but nothing i can do now...oh well, live and learn...and i've got 0% now so it isnt all that bad....except when i try to accelerate, that can be disappointing...

Yeah, $8700 sounds about right on a trade-in, especially during a special event like that. KBB lists trade in in "good" condition on a car similar to yours (06 LS, no options) at $9600 so you're really not losing more than $1k on the trade, which is pretty good during a special event.

I was just home last week and Lawrence Chevy has a Yellow SS/SC sitting out front. Don't know if it's still there or not, but you may want to stop by there ASAP. It looked nice driving by it on the Carlisle Pike. It sat there from the day I was there until the day I left(Nov 10th-Nov 16th). I didn't stop to look at it since I already own one. Also my wife had an 05 base model Cobalt with 1300 miles and we were shocked when we got her Tucson how much the Cobalt had depreciated. They gave us 8000 for it. Base model Cobalts do not have any resale value at all it seems like.

This might help.... go to www.galves.com , that is the appraiser that dealerships(atleast in NJ) use. They will not accept the the appraisal that www.KBB.com or www.NADA.com use.... so your best bet is to pay the little bit that galves charges and print it out and bring it to the dealership and tell them that is what you will accept for a trade-in price. and they will have little room to argue. Hope this helps. if you need more info feel free to PM me.

P.s.
This is what i did when i traded in my SRT-4 and bought my Cobalt SS S/C

I wonder how much more it will drop by summer of 08 w/ about 45000 miles on it. Im sure the value will drop much slower...maybe i can get like 6500 for it then.

Ok, all you young'ns listen up for a sec. The second you drive a brand new car off the dealers lot, brand really doesn't matter, its "Trade In" value has just dropped 20%. Thats right, from the time you sign on the dotted to the time you actually get into traffic on the way home, you have just lost 1/5th of the money you paided/agreed to pay for the car. Deal with it or go through all the trouble of selling the vehicle on the private market.

And I was about expecting 20%...but down to $8700 from $12900 is a good bit more....1/3rd to be exact....w/ only 8200 miles on it.

I would love to help you, but unfortuneately, this is the way it goes..
So you lose $4200 on your ls.. then you get an ss s/c and potentially lose around $6000.. seeing as how the ss s/c costs more, i think this is a fair assessment. So you take the money you saved ( roughly $10,200 ) by not selling your ls, and drop a crate LSJ+ Tranny in there.
Ask the tekkies in the 2.0 performance section roughly how much this would cost.
You wont have the show, BUT who cares when you've got the go!!!

Bump

P.M. me if you have any sales related Q's. I can also help you with your local dealers inventory, and tell you what dealers near you have exactly what you want, so they dont sell you on something else!
(dont feel bad if this happened to you.. I do it to people everyday. EXCEPT when they want an ss s/c. Because, then they are my friend)

Around this area of PA, LS's are all you'll find.
