Anyone Powdercoat thier OEM 18s?
I'm going to go to flat black. I have the powdercoater and oven large enough to do it myself, and I'll be getting new tires soon, so I'd like to powdercoat the wheels.
For anyone that has done this:
- Did you media blast or use a (EDIT) chemical stripper to remove the paint?
- Did you polish the wheel before you powdercoated?
- Would it make a difference if I polish because they are going to be black?
- Did you powdercoat the ENTIRE wheel (inside rim, bead,) or just the front & back?
- Did you preheat the wheel prior to powdercoating?

j/k, I'm kinda interested in this as well as I will be powdercoating a set of wheels this winter.
Yes, this is the best winter project. I don't think you will find anyone on this board that powdercoated their wheels or any wheels. I would start looking on other forums/internet for that. But good luck with it
I had mine powdercoated Gloss Black.
-Media blasted
-no
-no idea
-entire wheel bead and all
-yes I had the wheels heated after blasting to release any gasses in the aluminum so the powdercoating would not bubble and look like ****. Its still a chancy job, but mine came out fine.

-Do not polish(just makes ithe job harder to do)
-Yes ^^^^^
-Yes
-Yes ,slowly raise the temp to around 400 with rims in oven, pull out ,coat and back in to bake.
Hope that helps.

a regular oven that gets up to 450 degrees will work fine, but as previously stated - once you use it to powdercoat, you can't use it to prepare food anymore.
In my case I have a very large oven capable of doing the rims. I've been preparing to do this.
SS/SCking, thank you so much for answering the questions. I think I have one more.
There's a lot of people online saying this effects the integrity of the wheel. I can't see this being an issue because this is a common procedure. Know if this is an urban legend?

Steel is Tempered at 500 degrees, so its Close! Just make sure you cool them fast Locks the Carbon in so the steel retains its orignal Hardness!

The only you could run in to is if your wheel has imperfections in it (ie.small gas bubbles). This would only be a problem if you did not slowly heat the wheel. If you take you time and do it right you should not have a problem.
