looking into getting a lowering kit for my ss/sc, i was just wondering if any one has lowered their ss, and do i need new struts.

o yeah i was looking at the Eibach Sportline Springs

I honestly don't see why you would need new struts, your car is brand new and has brand new struts on it.

If the lowering springs are a different spring rate they might over work the struts and cause them to fail early. Suspension is a tricky thing and a lot of thought and math goes into it so if you throw off one or two variables like suspenion travel and spring rate you can end up causing other problems.

It's hard to say how lowering springs will effect the Cobalt and Cobalt SS's until someone has tried it and had it installed for a while... Unless your a suspension expert and then you probably know... If the spring rate is the same your struts will probably be ok, but you lose X inches of suspension travel and suspension travel is a good thing...

My eibach pro kit's go on early friday morning, I already have them. I'll let you all know how it goes as well as post pics when they are on friday afternoon. :cssNET: :cssNET:

Yes WE KNOW!! You've only mentioned like a million times!!! Instead of just selling, why don't you consider supporting the members on this site - like Rev It Up. At least he answers technincal questions and helps the buying process.

So I will put the challenge out to you. Why don't you answer the question that was posted in the first thread? Maybe I'll consider buying from you if we get an educated response.

Koni Nor KYB make struts yet, like I posted in the other forumn i had a 96 z24 with Eibach ran then for over 100k on the same stock struts, yes it does not ride well now but it ran fine up to around 50-60k.

It really depends on the car, some say theirs blew in a matter of days others did not have any issues.

but in other words your struts needed replacing sooner then they would have had they been matched up with the correct springs.

Bottom line is do it right or don't do it at all. Eibachs may still be a mild drop but performance springs require a performance strut.

SPS (spswebpage.com) sends struts to Koni to have them gutted and made to Koni spec for the ION...may want to see what they can do for you.

If the spring rate is close to the same I would say your probably ok, but if you install them and your ride is a bit bounce then you know the springs are to powerful for the struts.

I went to the dealer today to get some problems taken care of. Last time i was there i noticed a cobalt with 18's on it and a small gap. Turns out the dealer actually lowered it, so my guess is its all under warranty. Im not going to say its safe to lower on stock struts tho, but i know all they did was put springs on it cause their charge for the lowering was 500. Figuring that springs are about 200t+, theres no way different struts were on it. Kinda makes me want to ask them to lower my car and see if theyll do it under warranty

why is it that no one around here does their own work? I'm not a mechanic by a long shot but I notice that on both the ION and Cobalt forums nobody does their own work. Everyone seems to be finding other people to put on their springs, intake, short shifter, exhaust and wheels, etc.

not trying to point anyone out in particular but man who can we learn from if no one touches their own car?

A lot of times it takes expensive equipment to do your own work. Putting in lowering springs needs spring compressors to get the struts in and out. Afterwards a front end alignment needs to be done. Exhaust work needs welding in most cases. I do as much as I can in my garage with simple hand tools.

Hey there. I wouldnt say that no one around here doesnt do there own work cuz i know a few people deffintly do like myself. So far I put my intake on, installed a short shifter, threw my wheels on ( I dont see why you would need a mechanic ) and im also putting my lowering springs on tomorrow then going to a mechanic to get an allignment. And I also insalled my rear valence my self also ( Note: i dont know why the pics are working :rolleyes: ) .

Lift and alignment rack... GOt em
GenSys scantool and diag equip....got it
spare time...priceless


when i bought my car the dealer told me any certified tech can work under the warranty, so technically i could get paid for fixing my own car bet it is a lot simpler to go into the service dept and say my axle is bad, or the Bank 1 sensor 1 is too rich.

we'll see

oh and a trained ape could put springs on, you can even rent the spring compressors at local stores
so i agree, at least know what is going on with your car and work on it yourself
then get the warranty to pay the parts and labor
little side work>dealer service time

I haven't looked, but struts are a very commonly replaced part. I'm sure there is, if not will be, aftermarket availability. What do you think you get when you go to Car-X? They sure aren't GM parts, probably Monroe.

The springs are a canadian company called MRI racing it lowered the car 1.6" its no bouncy at all. I dont understand why you would even think it would be bouncy. Its way to stiff right now though without performance shocks. Once they make new shocks it should be back to feeling like stock but better.

I dont think you could move the car with a drop like that. Or turn the wheels. Or drive over a speed bump.

i have had sportlines for about two weeks now but i am too afraid to put them on because i dont want to ruin a brand new car.....i think im going to go with the pro kit...
