good question... nothing that i'm aware of. i dont usually keep tabs on saturn cars though, just the prodigies that come along like the sky.

umm...I am not talking about a Saturn---rather the max revolutions per minute of the 2.4L
(aka--the redline on the tach)

I looked in the window and saw the tach...so yeah I am sure. Isn't the 2.0 S/C redlined at 6500rpm? Werid

The tach is actually kind of funny - the first red mark is @ 6500 but then there's another little red mark at 6750 and then the solid red band continues from that point... I've made the needle shoot just over 6500 with my SS coupe (automatic) so I dunno how to establish a concrete redline... perhaps it really is 6750!

On many cars (Cobalt inc) it the tach line goes to a thin redline or a little before the solid thicker redline. I think it acts like a warning to the driver that your getting near the redline.

Jonel, you're so kind. It's called laziness because 2006 Cobalt Specs are at the very top of this page.

i just drove a 2.4 ss 5spd today , and my honest opinion , its better than the 2.0 s/c

and the redline is alot higher than the the 2.2 , and like the s/c , you hit the rev limiter before the tach gets close to reline , but id have to guess the rev limiter is in the 6700-7000 range

The revlimiter doesn't always work. In another thread, I posted about my mishap with a 92 Mazda protege. Had the pedal floored in 2nd, and was going for 3rd, but went into first. Since I was doing around 50 I almost maxed out the 8,000 RPM tach. Not good for the engine thats for sure. So if your new at driving a manual, don't downshift in a wrong gear at high speed.

If anyone wants to clear it up for me, downshifting into 1st or 2nd when your going fast would over ride the rev limiter...correct?

And it is true the Cobalt S/C cuts off before the redline...so it isn't really harmful to max it out once in awhile after it's broken in right?

Downshifting into any lower gear at a speed that is too highway is a bad idea.

As for downshifting into 1st---I would not do that unless at very low speeds--maybe 15km/h? (10mph) Very hard on the driveleine if going much faster then that.

Oh wait your talking about overriding the rev limiter----I don't think so......

the rev limiter doesnt compinsate for stupidity(best term i can think of at the moment)

when you force the motor to over rev buy way of mechanical force , it is impossible for the rev limiter to keep the motor under its intended rpm

my friend did a 3-2 down shift , in place of a 3-4 up shift at 6500 in his 2.4 cav , and cracked all 8 exhaust lifters , and each exhaust vavle kissed the pistons , and 1 lifter came apart and cause alot of problems and crap to be send through out the motor , and he got off lucky

I assume his motor quit working after that right? I'm stating for the record that were someone who wanted to wing their motors into car heaven, they could do what I did (on accident of course). Thats why new stick shift drivers must exercise caution and avoid getting on the gas untill they are more experienced. Nothing worse than driving, shifting into a wrong gear and hearing metal fly, and your transmission blow at the same time.

If you are new at driving stick, always watch the tach right after you shift. If you shifted into a wrong gear (lower gear than intended), you'll feel a slight pull as the rpms start to go up, and if you see the needle slying onto the right side of the tach, immediately engage the clutch. Do it before redline and you shouldn't have problems. This is an issue that i'm afraid might be more common that one thinks when it comes to new drivers.

That is funny.....really funny, must've sounded cool. :-D

When I am power shifting, I see the tach get up to about 6.7k + with the clutch in...

Meaning... 3rd gear gas all the way down... Hits 6.4k+ clutch in, gas 1/2 way, shift 4th clutch up and the tach will jump up to 6.7k+ before it lands at like 3.5k...

Anyone else notice that?

powershifting is incredibly hard on your car  I cannot beleive people do that---remember your clutch has no warranty!
