Smart FourTwo
Smart FourTwo
I must be getting out of touch with automotive news. I had heard for quite a while that the FourTwo was coming to North America, but I'd never heard anyone say that they'd seen any on lots or on the roads.
Anyways, at the mall the other night I saw my first FourTwo in person. The guy who was driving it was a salesman, and of course he said he loved it. It really was pretty cool though, lots of room for two people, and it didn't look out of place, goofy or ugly at all in the parking lot. It had a diesel engine and a sequential 6 speed that is supposedly getting 70 MPG (UK not US) on the highway. The transmission had stick a in the center where the shifter usually is that had selections for forward, reverse, and neutral and there were paddles on the steering wheel for shifting the forward gears. Over all it was a pretty damn cool car, and he said it was a "shade" over CAN$20k.

My bad, it's spelled ForTwo. Apparently it is supposed to land in October, so I guess this could be one of the first in this area. More info on this car can be found here:

On a side note, the salesman said that his last vehicle had been a Toyota Tacoma. Seems weird for a guy who works at a Benz dealership.

Apparently they do well in crash tests.... although I wouldn't take a chance of finding that out. The salesman said that the coupe is built to absorb all impact from front or side impacts to the rear of the car. There are too many pickups, SUV's, semi's and moose where I'm from, but it would work well for a grocery getter in the city.
