anybody else redline first like I did today.....oops

Today, being a wise ass, spun my tires all through first and redlined it to 7000 or so. I got lulled into hearing the screach of the tires and forgot to shift...oops. Yeah, stupid I know, but question is, how much redline abuse, missing gears abuse do you think the ss/sc can take. I would assume that it could take the odd 7000rpm redline or missed gear since the internals are built pretty tough.

I dont think it will do to much damage. It just bounces off the limiter doesnt really go into damaging RPMs

I think the smoke from your tires was blocking your view... they would never let it hit 7000 never

thats not true... 6400 or what not might be where the fuel cuts out at.... but the momentum of the engine spinning could very well carry up higher say if he pushed in the clutch pretty close to the actual redline or just from driveing and not shifting. i've takein the Z24 well above its cut-out redline a few times while getting caught up in a burnout. plus if you were to acidentally shift into a really low gear like 2nd while at 80+ mph....you'll bury that tac

Really, the only thing you are likely to damage with such abuse is the valve springs. GM is notorious for using crappy valve springs to begin with and getting them floating can shorten the life of them, break them, etc.

I would not worry about a single episode, it is not likely there was enough stress to lower the life expectancy of the springs appreciably.

Our redline is 6,450RPM, unlikely you hit 7,000 RPM. More like maybe 6500 if it went that high.

i've hit 7000 rpm (maybe even a little over) when i was cruising in fifth and accidentally dropped into second. i've done this twice, driving home at 3 in the morning tired ashell, and insted of bouncing off the limiter, the engine spins to 7000+ til you push the clutch back in. some scary stuff.

I would say its possible doing what iso did. The engine was turned so fast by the driveline, not its own power. Hitting the limiter going down hill would probably do the same thing. As far as turning 7K, the 2.0 on the SS is an LSJ, which from what Ive read is capable of more, stock. As far as the 2.2 or 2.4 Im not sure. Anyone else know what the limits are on the 2.2 & 2.4?

I bounced off my limiter once at about 6600 right where the redline goes solid.

wahts the redline on these? Its not bad to go over your redline anyways, just dont go TOO far over. your motor can handle it, hell the redlines in japan are 500 or more RPM anyways

My car only looks me out of first and reverese all other gears are free game. And it also looks you out if you try to put it in gear without the clutch in.

I usually don't take my automobiles even close to redline. When I get the cobalt s/c, the highest I will take it will be 5600. That's the maximum power output RPM. Anything more is undue stress and unproductive for the engine. Plus i'd like the engine to last more than 100 K miles.

It'll still grind away though...my foot slipped off the clutch a couple weeks ago going into second and I heard the sweet sound of grinding gears. Note to self...never bother doing that again. If think you're right though that if the clutch isnt in it won't let you go into first or reverse...that would explain why when I'm having one of my days I haven't been able to slam it in gear when I forget the clutch .
