New to the site...thinking about buying..
Hey all,
I have been browsing around on the forum for the past couple weeks, reading up on these cars. I currenly have a 2005 Colorado, which was my first GM purchase. I was pleasently suprised with the truck, and have had zero problems with it. I have since done many things to in, including a lift among other things.
My work situation is changing where I will be driving 140 miles a day 2 days a week and am looking for something a little more comfortable and something that gets a little better mileage.
That being said, the first time I saw an SS Cobalt I fell in love. The looks and styling are killer. From what I've read, the performance is pretty good stock, and it seems like there is a pretty good size aftermarket industry for them. I have looked at a couple cars, both the supercharged version, and they were both fun to drive.
Anyways, a local dealer has a couple 06s, both S/C with about 8000 miles on them. They are asking $18k for each, which seems like a good starting price. Just wondering about long term quality on these cars. Is there any extra added maintenance with having a supercharged car? Anything I should purchase right away for the car if I were to buy one?
Any tips, advice, insight is much appreciated.
Thanks!
Mike
Also, for anyone who cares, here is a picture of my truck.

25k miles later and I have not had any major problems. mostly just an oil change here and there a tire rotation stuff like that other things i have had fixed was the sun roof (2 times) and the barametric pressure sensor on the sc'er other than that the car runs like a champ and I have had most of my mods since about 15k miles.
welcome to the site and I hope your in an ss/sc soon good luck

i bought mine in june 06'. it was an 05 and had 5000 mi, i got it for 17899. i got on cars.com and found the cheapest ss/sc then contacted the dealer that had the one i wanted and asked if they would match the price. yeah i had to drive a couple hrs but it was worth it imo. my employer told me after i bought the car that all employees get a gm supplier discount which means i could have gotten a brand new one
but anyway are you driving 140 highway miles or around the city? i think the cobalt is cool on the highway and a bit uncomfortable in traffic. i have 22k on the car and i think i will need tires soon. oil changes are alittle more expensive (about $40 + filter to do it yourself). i think gas milage is about avg or a little below for a 4cyl (24-28 mpg). i have alittle warrenty work i have to get done but thats about it, it runs great.
i say go for it

Of the 140 miles, I think about 135 is all freeway.
If I could get close to 30mpg on these trips, for the freeway, that would be good enough for me. My truck has gone from 25mpg freeway to about 17mpg because of the lift and tires...
You say $40 for oil changes...is there some kind of special oil these cars use? I have been using Castrol fully synthetic in my truck since I bought it. Usually costs me about $30 for the oil (it uses 6 quarts). What do you run in the Cobalt?

my oil change cost only about 25 bucks, i think its 28.XX? Anyways I get about 32 mpg on the highway, but only about 22 mpg on city streets. If you are looking at a ss s/c that is with the g85 performanc package then i would say that price is about right...although you could probably go 17500ish. If it is without the g85 then i would say more like
17,000. Check out what the options cost you and then find your price from there. The g85 package is 1500 from the factory...so it's a bigger option.
Get a ss s/c! you will love it.

mobil is used in these cars and the range is kinda between 40 and 60 bucks depending on prices where you live just for oil. I would not use any other oil other than mobil the cobalt can get A LOT of miles off of a single oil change seriously A LOT. highway mpg is about 30-34 stock depending on traffic attitude.
You might seriously consider a 2.4L instead of a SS/SC.
The body styling is still great, it only lacks the lips on the front and rear bumpers, and possibly the high profile spoiler(Depending on where you buy it from)
They around 30-34 mpg on highway, plus you have the option of auto. (If you really want to save gas, Go with the LT, then you'll probably get around 38 mpg on highway
I know I'm gonna catch grief for this, but a naturally aspirated engine will be easier on maintenance that ANY F/I engine, sorry guys, superchargers make for more wear and tear.
But for 18k with <10,000 miles, that's a good steal.
Either way you go, the cobalt is a great drive

I want the manual for sure. My first two cars were sticks, and my truck was the first auto I've had and I can't stand it. I don't know if I'll ever buy another auto.
I don't mind extra maintenance, I do all my own vehicle maintenance...I just don't want there to be a bunch of extra costs associated with the S/C. I understand it will be harder on the engine with the S/C...just as long as I'm not going to need to replace some crazy expensive parts every couple years because I have a S/C.

Well, just thought I would let you all know I am joining the crowd. I finished the deal today on the 2006 SS S/C at Good Chevrolet in Renton, WA. Ended up getting it for $17,500. Car only has 8000 miles on it, has the Recaro seats, and moonroof. They have to fix a couple things this week and I will be picking it up on Saturday. Here are some pics!

congrats on the buy if you weren't in washington i was almost thinking about doing soome buisness with you but I wouldn't have given you such a good deal. I love my cobalt too much to take a hit on it.
colorado_to_cobalt, yes, I am on that site. In fact, I am one of the moderators, my name is 2005-colorado.
This is my new name on here...just figured 2005-colorado wouldn't work anymore.
