Are al the 2.0L supercharged engines 50-state legal?
Are al the 2.0L supercharged engines 50-state legal?
I live in California which has some of the strictest emission laws in the country. I want to transplant a Ecotec 2.0L Supercharged engine from a recked 2005 cobalt ss into my cobalt. The engine is from out of state and I don't have access to the original emissions sticker. The California laws basically states (from my understanding) that if your car is a California car (50-State legal or California Emissions Legal) the replacement engine must be a 50-State legal or California emissions legal engine. I'm just wondering what the emissions sticker on a non-California car says, I know there are some car models that only make a 50-state legal engine and others that are built specifically for where it is to be sold. I'm just trying to find out if the 2.0L supercharged engine is one of the 50-state legal. Can some of you please tell me what your stickers say and what year your car is? Thanks in advanced!!!!!!!
I live in california as well. Its quite a pain to do motor swaps. First of all, the engine has to be the same year or newer as the car you are swapping it into. Second, it can not generate any more emissions compared to the original motor.
After you have completed the swap, you are supposed to take it to a station where they will visually inspect it to make sure you have all the smog equipment, etc. They will then perform the basic sniffer test. If everything works out well, you will get a sticker that you get to put under the hood or the door jam. It basically says its a "certified swap". Its alot of work to do all this, but it has to be done.
I Dont know how the 2.2 to 2.0 swap will work, specially since the supercharger complicates things. This is only a brief summary of what you have to do, go to the DMV and do some research if you really want to do this. Good luck, I dont know what will be harder, geting the 2.0 computer and things to work, or getting it to pass smog.

yes, the 2.0 is 50 state legal.
read this http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/vcpdf/vehcode.pdf
then you'll be informed.

But hey if you're gonna go through a big swap like that might as well go for the solstice or sky redline setup. 2.0L direct injection turbo...you gotta swap cpu's and harnesses anyway
Thanks everyone for all the help!!!!

I think it would be easier to move to another state...
No ****, I linked the document, not the specific pages. I love the California weather but I'd be hard pressed to live there.
The SS/SC is not 50 state legal, there are 2 emission override codes, one for cars ordered in California, Massachusetts or New York to have federal rather than California emissions (NB8)
and one for Federal emission states to have California, New York Vermont, Massachusetts, or Maine emissions (NC7)
At least that's how I'm reading the Cobalts option codes, anybody else have any real info on this?

I live in southern CA because it is sunny all the time ...... if I could see it through the smog. Would love to move but this is where my job is (work seens to get in the way of everything).
Have Loads of fun
