Police Scanners...

I tryed a search on these, but didn't find much...

I was wondering if anyone has a police scanner in their cobalt, and if so, what kind? I was thinking about getting one, but don't really know anything about them.. Just that they are illegal in a lot of states..

It would be worthless to have one unless your going to follow the police/fire/ems everywhere for now reason.

I'd save my money if I were you

Yeah, perhaps it isnt called police scanner, but basically I want the CB radio that I could listen in on the police transmissions. Maybe that doesn't even exist, but I thought that you could get a radio that would listen in on what the police are coordinating. Just so I can hear if they are planning roadblocks, and if they are trying to find people street racing.

I've got a radar detector, but I would still like to eavesdrop on the police to hear what they're up to...

what are you trying to do with it. i grew up using them. only thing it will tell you is what the calls are and where the calls are at. it wont help you monitor location or police units at all.....

They exist, its what the Police Cars use. Its just useless to anyone thats not a cop/fire/ems personnel. You can get a CB but it might be hard to hide the antenna. Your better off saving the money and effort and possible tickets

those are coordinated to the affect that there locations are kept secerate, even on there radio talks. thats why they still use 10-xxx codes.

oh, its also illagel to get a cb to be used in there frequency, (you need the crystal for it). only legal thing to do is get a scanner.

Even if you did get a cb, you would need to start memorizing all of their codes, and that took my buddy, who was becoming a cop, about a month and he was in class every day. Also, different cities will sometimes use different codes. To guess I would say there are at least 100 codes.

Modern police communications are encoded (encrypted) anyway.

Most Police transmissions are just above the 2M ham band(144Mhz-148Mhz).

Personally, I use my Yaesu VX-150(2m ham Transceiver) to scan the local police/fire bands. I like checking things like that out when they happen.

I AM a licensed HAM Radio operator and member of the Whiteside/Lee County ARES(Amateur Radio Emergency System). I am also a NWS Weather spotter. It's kinda fun, if not a bit geeky.

^ You can look up your local police/emergency frequencies there

A decently priced Scanner:

A Uniden is fine for what your doing probably. I'm just biased and prefer the build quality I can get from HAM Radio suppliers.

most officers don't use the radio that much they use text communication on the computer.

I can proudly say that I have not once seen any fast and furious movies. I hate vin diesel!!

But, yeah, I have given up on the idea of getting one, simply due to the fact of memorizing all those codes! I'll just take my ticket, and sell the car....

If you want something that tells you where cop cars are get a Bear Tracker. It uses the cop cars Locating becon and tells you where all the cars are in a 5 mile radius on a GPS screen
