Air Intake or Exhaustt??
Hey guys, I have a question for you. I'm going to get some mods for my SS/SC, but I don't know what to get first. Can you guys give me a little advice on what to get first. Thinking about getting an Intake or an Exhaust. What do you guys recommend? What type? more bang for my buck you know. Thanks again guys.
Dude, I'd just leave the exhaust as is. The sound is good, and like it's been said, there's nothing else out there yet. All I know is I'll never buy another aftermarket exhaust. Bought one for my old Cavalier, cost over $1000, including header.....end result.....loud, yeah that's just about it, oh and the idiots that installed it did a **** poor job. Biggest mistake I ever did on my last car. The intake I bought was fairly crappy too. Everyone talks about intakes and how good they are, the sound, the extra horsepower.....well, the one I got for my cav again sucked ass.....bogging doen in third immeditely after install. Second biggest modding mistake. Yeah, nobody tells you that some of these things are just big ripoffs. Even when they come with the dyno sheets to back them, I'd still be very cautious. This is why, if these guys selling the CAI's don't offer you a completely satisfied(no bogging out), return warranty on thier stuff, I'm definately not buying. The only stuff I'll likely buy will be the stage 1 or stage 2 from GM when it comes out.
their are exhaust out their look in the 2.0 leter performance section. zinners stickey post. you can get shorty headers form syndy or whatever its spelled. and you can get a CAI form K&N just came out that is also located in the 2.0 leter performance section. but it all comes down to how mutch you want to spend. 1000+for the exhaust and headers or like 200+-50 for a CAI.
Does anyone have pics of your OEM exhaust? As far as the amount of bents, etc.? I would imagine that you would benefit a lot more from an exhaust (most F/I cars do, depending on how restrictive the OE one is). But there again, it also depends on how restrictive our intake is...
The only real restriction in our stock exhaust is the muffler. If I was going to upgrade anything exhaust wise I would upgrade the muffler with a Oval bodied one.
The $600 cat-back people here have been installing seem more at home on a Civic not to mention the round muffler they include is terrible sounding/looking.
A muffler will run you $80-150 and a good install might run $60.

the smarter thing to do is a get a full exhaust system before you get an intake. because that way youll release hot air faster. if you got an intake first, youll be receiving more air in the engine, but it wont leave the engine quicker because it has the same exhaust. dont just get a muffler, get the full shabang.
The stock exhaust is more than enough to support a CAI. A stock exhaust with a muffler upgrade is just as good as these $600 fart can Cat-Backs. In an exhaust system velocity is more important than overall flow.
The thing that I don't think a lot of people understand is the whole dynamic of how changing exhaust and intake actually changes the way your car performs and a lot of the crap the aftermarket sells doesn't give you optimum performance and actually hurts performance in some cases. Hence my comments about bogging out in third and no real gain from the exhaust I bought. There is a lot of science behind cars and you just can't go about hacking something onto it, but if you do and it doesn't work out like you thought, at least one guy waarned you. That's why I am totally about getting as much information, especially the dyno sheet on any performance modification and a guarantee in writing before I'll make another modification. And even then, you still might get shafted with a piece of crap. IMHO
