Wont Shift into Park
Wont Shift into Park
I was wondering if anyone else with an automatic coupe is having this problem. My key will not turn all the way to the off position sometimes. I have to actually jam the gear shift lever into park to get it to allow my key to turn off. It has been in the shop numerous times for the shifter cable to be adjusted. They just last week replaced the shifter cable but it is still doing it. Now they are going to change the ignition switch. They said that Chevy said there are a few others having this same problem but no real fix yet. Just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem and what they did to fix it if it has been fixed yet.
I had that prob about 1-1/2 months ago, but only once. Mine was just the key not going to the off position. I just kept trying to turn it off, and finally it did. Don't know what to tell yah about the fix though, since it's already been in service.
Try to park straight in, dont have the wheel turned at all, Cause sometimes it wont shut off, or even turn the key. Its like that on all cars. And if you cant shut it off and in park try to move the wheel as hard as you can. Then shut it. Hope that helps.

Yes.
All cars are like that now by law.
It seems I can hear the brake interlock engaging, when I step on the brake and the car is in park.

Yep, right under the gear shifter is where you hear it. Weird ehH?
Yeah its a federal law that automatic car's have to have the brake pressed when going to Drive gear. Kinda stupid
thanks
Thanks guys! I have tried all that you have said and none of it works. Thanks for the bulletin #. I will take it in to the dealer monday before they do all the work to the ignition.

Hey any time! I hope a new shifter will fix your problem. On GM's Tech forum a few were discussing about not going into park and found damage to the shift inter-lock system. Also we have just had a Cobalt that would not allow the key to turn in the ignition lock cylinder. Do not know what will fix this problem yet, another tech is working on it.
