I know little to nothing about my new Cobalt

is there a certain octane gas I should use?

 

For the SS / SC GM recommends 91 octane.

 

Stock? you can use anything.

I bought a new GM product not very long that GM claimed I could ONLY use the low octane gas at the pump

Im not trying to destroy a brand new car

 

Read your owner's manual front to back You'll find more answers to questions without having to ask.

the book says its best to use premium but you can use lower octane at a loss of considerable power

 

if you use lower octane and your engine starts knocking then just switch to a higher octane. Or just go with 91 from the start

 

That I understand....but on the web you can get just as many wrong answers as right. The manual will be your best source for correct information.

Keep that ignorant attitude about not reading an owners manual and you'll find out soon enough that you WILL be destroying a brand new car.

SS Supercharged cars REQUIRE 91 octane to run correctly. Good luck and keep her in one piece. And PLEASE read the owners manual.

Here's the thing, you CAN use anything you want. However; I have seen that stock cobalts has roughly 3 degrees of knock from the factory on low octane gas. Using a higher octane does help this. But with ANY car out there, the higher octane is better than the low grade stuff.

Sorry for being kind of a smart ass before. I forget sometimes that once, I was a new owner too.

You may all know this already but it says in the manual that Premium is required for the 2.4L also.

On my 1999 S-10 Xtreme (4.3L) they claimed to ONLY use 87 octane

thats the only reseson I asked

 

Easy man. Most people out ther DON'T read the manual. I don't think its ignorance, just lack of patience and time. Who isn't guilty of that?

Base, LS, LT 87 Octane
SS 2.4 and SS/SC 91+

 

Dont be a cheap ass! use premium

I suppose so. You probably wouldnt notice much. Around me you hardly ever see 91 octane. 87 89 and 93.

 

wow some tudes in this thread.. i use 93 oct. in my ride..

i like it cause even with the high gas prices.. here in wyo we still have the cheapest gas in the country.. 2.24 for premium
