Nitrous Explosion Aftermath Pictures 56k no no

Well as some of you may know, about a month ago I was racing the Cobalt and I ran 14.6, but then later in the day blew from a nitrous explosion. I took my car to a shop where it's been on the waiting list to get looked and and I finally got a chance to go see it. The head on the car was off and here's a list of the damage. Upon looking at it, 2 spark plugs were crushed, a rocker was broken, a piece of piston was stuck in the valve opening of one of the valves, I have 2 crisp pistons (3,4), and the other pistons have some damage (1,2). I laughed so hard when I saw this, oh well, it's gonna get rebuilt with new everything soon. Gonna be great to put the damaged parts on the wall as mommentos. I'll let the pics tell the rest of the story...

Here's the video of the 14.6 run and then the nitrous explosion for those of you that haven't seen it yet:

Holy Crap Batman! Would it be cheaper on you to start with a factory new crate engine or are you going to let the shop rework this engine?

i just figured you would like to know that nitrous oxide is a non flammable gas so there's no way it could have exploded. it is however an oxidizer which makes fire burn much hotter and you were most likely pumping too much of it into your engine.

either way, build it up better and get into the 13's!

There is nothing wrong with nitrous on a 2.2L

The intake manifold is plastic...all L61 manifolds are plastic from the factory.

As far as the nitrous explosion, this is caused by fuel puddling with a dry manifold. Sucks it happened but..it happends.

From the sound of damage, it sounds more like a strong detonation rather than spraying too much fuel. Too much fuel would have caused actual physical damage...like snapping rods for example. It would have been a stress issue. This sounds like a terrible detonation caused by lack of fuel...hence...the puddling.

I say rebuild the motor and double the shot of nitrous you were pushing. As you can probably tell I'm a slow learner...

after this u def. need to make that engine stronger pistons, rods, heads, and a metal intake manifold. in the end it will all pay off i have a good feeling. And about the pistons as momentos i have one huge piston from a twin-turbo boat engine pushin 1200hp that was blown and boy is it an eyecatcher.

That still won't solve his fuel puddling issues if it happends again. No matter what, it'll still be a dry intake manifold and fuel puddling will always be a possibility.

Just a little information about what exactly happened: when the window switch was set, it came on accidentally (window switches fault) and I pressed the gas pedal...boom.

Like I said, I'm not upset about it at all to be honest. I was going to be rebuilding the entire damn engine already, this just gives me incentive to do it now.

I'm sending the car to Jason Whitfield's shop...some of you might happen to know him considering he owns a 9 second street Cobalt. He and I have been in the works on a project coming up...lots to update with, I'm not saying too much right now...don't ask.

The car got futt bucked, but hey, gotta pay to play
