View Full Version : Make Fun of me all you want.....
Python467 09-09-2005, 12:28 AM O.K. ... today i went to the Chevy dealership by my house and i told them i was interested in a Cobalt SS S/C. i spoke to the sales person and he was friendly, but half retarded....(he kept telling me how big the TURBO is) ....ne how he set me up in one for a test drive and i drove it for 5 miles... Although i was impressed by it being the fastest "4 banger" i've ever driven. I was not too impressed w/the quality of the S/C SS's interior...the leather seemed almost plasticy, no arm rest, did not like the guages and i did like the way the clutch felt but i just couldnt see my self driving the car in a few inches of snow in the winter, or in heavy day to day traffic with that grabby clutch. So when i returned to the dealership from beating the hell out of the SS S/C ( ) i told the salesman that i was very impressed with the car as a toy, but if i am going to be driving it daily for 3yrs. i would like something a little more comfy and easy to drive... At this point he told me he had just the thing for me....he pulled up in an SS NON S/C... At first i was like WTF no way, this thing must totally suck...when i looked around i noticed that not too much was different on the outside besides the picknic table wing. when i went in the inside i was quite happy to see the same aluminum dash, much better looking WHITE faced guages, an arm rest and suprisingly comfortable cloth seats! when i asked him how much he said "About 50 bucks a month cheaper" i was stunned... but he would not let me drive it because they were so close to closing. my 2 questions are.....1. is the SS non S/C MUCH slower than the S/C SS? and 2. will/do they make performance parts for this motor?
MarcS 09-09-2005, 12:31 AM I'm not exactly sure how much slower it is, however I'm sure the aftermarket will also be supple for the 2.4L SS.
ThEChEat 09-09-2005, 12:37 AM Being it's not supercharged, you won't get that extra boost but the same supercharger on the 2.0L fits the 2.4L... however that supercharger costs around $3,000 :X. I see this car being supercharged in the later years and being a top notch competitor. I know there are upgrades for your motor out there, but it's not specifically Cobalt made.
MikeSS 09-09-2005, 12:52 AM There are only 4 differences between the SS and SS S/C. MAny people on this board (sss/c owners) get very defensive about the SS and say it isn't sporty enough.
The only differences are, 2.0L S/C motor, saab 5 speed transmission, 18 in wheels vs 17 inchers, bodykit with huge ass spoiler.
As stated above, the SS 2.4L should hit 60 in 7.0 seconds. I just picked mine up, it rocks, I can't wait to get it to the track.
I personally think the 2.4L SS looks classier (less boy-racer)
avro206 09-09-2005, 01:06 AM The 5 speed 2.4L is a dream. Easy as hell to smoothly pull away from stop. I have head enough complaints about the S/C SS trans/clutch to know that mines easier.
The suspension is also different from the S/C SS but is still very capable while maintaing a great ride. Check it out and let us know what you thought.
But it is proably 1 second slower 0-60.

The 2.4L SS also comes with all-season performance rubber on 17" polished aluminum wheels, instead of the SS-SC'd 18" painted aluminum wheels with summer only, ultra-high performance rubber. Leave it to GM to put shitty painted aluminum wheels on the expensive model, and then put better looking, more scratch-resistant polished aluminum wheels on the SS-SC. And if I'm not mistaken, the 2.4L SS engine has VVT which the 2.0L does not have. The 2.4L SS also looses the SS-SC front aluminum suspension arms, and has the FE3 sport suspension instead of the more capable FE5 suspention on the SS-SC. I'm also unsure if the 2.4L SS has the same front/rear disc brakes and pad material as the SS-SC coupe.
97cavie24ls 09-09-2005, 02:10 AM i found the 2.4 ss alot easier to drive , and i had more fun in it
funny thing is i even drove a redline , and liked the 2.4 ss more
but the redline felt better than the ss/sc i drove
its worth the drive to go try the 2.4 ss
phxSS 09-09-2005, 02:42 AM Yea, I drove an '03 cobra, but just found the V6 mustang to be superior. I didn't think the supercharged cobra was much faster at all.
avro206 09-09-2005, 08:50 AM The brakes are the same as the S/C as are the 5 lug axles. Unsure about pad material.
MikeSS 09-09-2005, 10:23 AM Yea, I drove an '03 cobra, but just found the V6 mustang to be superior. I didn't think the supercharged cobra was much faster at all.
Thats just ignorant.
Now, maybe if you compared a cobra to a Mustang GT.......
Cause cars with a 34HP (Cobalts) diff are just like cars with a 200HP (Mustangs) diff.
FaStSrT-4 09-09-2005, 10:30 AM Yea, I drove an '03 cobra, but just found the V6 mustang to be superior. I didn't think the supercharged cobra was much faster at all.
I hope your being sarcastic.....
Darksun 09-09-2005, 11:43 AM I hope your being sarcastic.....
Yeah he is cant you tell by the smiley
And Python467's complaints aren't to out there. The clutch is grabby its not that easy a daily driver when all the car wants to do is buck in first gear and shift stupid and accelerate so people can't stand having to granny shift every gear just to have a half way decent drive. The tires complaint is right too were all gonna have to get a beater or winter tires if you have snow in your area. And after seeing the 4 door ss non-s/c I do like the way the exterior and interior look compared to our car I can't deny it. But hey i still love my Cobalt SS/SC
b-spot 09-09-2005, 01:33 PM Interesting that the suspension is different. Thats dissapointing, as I think that is the best feature of the SS/SC.
97cavie24ls 09-09-2005, 02:34 PM the sc has a bigger front sway bar , and i think the springs are different
orangepower 09-09-2005, 02:49 PM i think that the lower fascia on the rear bumper on the new ss NON SC is alot better looking than the grillwork on my SC. i can never get all the water out when I wash it so it has water spots on it all the time
However, i think that it looks alot better with the LS wing on it, less of an inferiority complex with the car. You know, hey look at me! I'm fast and flashy! Plus, you can actually see out the back, which is handy sometimes, like watching for PO-POs on the hiway, or maybe i'm too tall
Python467 09-09-2005, 04:10 PM wow! im really glad that i have joined this site thank you all for so much input and i will keep you posted on wether or not i end up getting one! :D
phxSS 09-09-2005, 09:05 PM MikeSS...read my post again. CAREFULLY. Notice the sarcastic smiley at the end of it.

lol

Yeah, read my post. Comparing a v6 stang to a cobra as sarcasm regarding a ss vs ss/sc isn't accurate.
Comparing a ls to a ss/sc maybe is.
phxSS 09-12-2005, 04:14 AM big difference between the SS. It is like comparing a v6 stang to a cobra.
djpatrick35 09-12-2005, 03:32 PM I personally think the 2.4L SS looks classier (less boy-racer)
I completely agree with you, MikeSS. I've currently got a base '05 Cobalt (Shutup! I'm a 23 year old newspaper reporter and I'm making a measly 24 large) and I'm currently saving up/building up a good credit history for the 2.4. I love the SS, except, as you implied, for the giant-ass tuner wing and I would also like the extra money to add upgrades.
For now, I'm slowly making upgrades to my car that are completely removable so I can play around with my car and still not sacrifice trade-in value for my (eventual) 2.4. It's a yellow 5-speed coupe and I've changed the shifter boot and stick, pedals, seat covers, floormats, steering wheel cover so that everything is yellow or black AND removable so that when I trade it in, the dealership will see more of the mileage and a clean car and less the 20-something male behind the wheel.
It looks good, but I've still got the unfortunate baseline steel wheels. I was wondering if anyone in the Chicagoland area had bought new rims and would be willing to sell their originals... I desperately want ACTUAL rims, but again, I don't want to buy new rims for my car that I'm going to be trading in within a year. When the SS comes, so will the rims, but for the time being, I want to keep it all in the family so it looks like I ordered the car that way.
Any takers with stock rims serving no purpose? If so, e-mail me at big_dan44@yahoo.com.
stlurbanpunk 09-12-2005, 05:47 PM hey welcome to the site... a reporter? like sports or like business? Did you just get out of college for that? sorry for all the questions, i'm a freshman and i'm already worring how i'm going to get started in my carrer.(civil engineering)
yeah for wheels i'd say get the cobalt's 16". Ebay might have a set... it will look nice! good luck.
Brandon97Z 09-12-2005, 06:45 PM just remember that the base is 4 lug and both ss's are 5 lug
djpatrick35 09-13-2005, 02:05 PM Man, I love this site! Everyone's helpful without tearing each other down.
Actually, I'm a jack of all trades reporter. I started by simply walking into the student newspaper office at Indiana University, wrote a couple of articles and fell in love with it. I started out in sports because I played everything in high school, but I wanted to broaden my horizons, so I now report on everything from Village Board meetings to stupid kids winning stupid science fairs...
Check my current s*** out at http://www.lakelandmedia.com/roundlake.html (the website sucks, but it always has at least three of my articles) or you can check out my college stuff at http://www.idsnews.com/profile.php?byline=Dan+Patrick
In total, between college and 8 months of pro work, I've written about 350-400 articles in almost 5 years.
If you're a freshman, don't worry, you've got PLENTY of time. What I've already learned in my first 8 months out of college is that while I was old down at IU, I'm freaking young in the real world and if I really wanted to, I could change professions in a snap. You've got plenty of time, try out your civil engineering, but take as many classes and try out as much stuff as you can because you never know what might capture your attention. Again, I just walked into the student newspaper looking for something to do and now it's what I do for a living. So many guidance counselors in high school cram the idea that every stinking thing you do at the age of 18 will have massive repurcussions on the rest of your life. It's total B.S. - All you need is a degree and a will to work (and a nice car always helps ) and you can do whatever the f*** you want.
Brandon, forgive me for the stupid question, but are there adapters to make the 4 lug a 5 lug and are they readily available for cheap? Again, starving reporter here...

cool! i like the article about Kendo. i bet you learn a lot of info as a reporter. You should come to STL and work for the post dispatch as an editor or something, you know have like an editor's view and all that jazz. I think you will take your carrer to great distance, physically and metaphoricly.
thanks for the advise about my future. right now my main classes i'm taking are ceramics, chemistry, calculus and discrete math (logics and such).
my plans are to become a civil engineer, but a part of myself still draws me to architecture. I love art, I'm artisticly inclined in every area except painting. architecture was my initial choice, but it judt doesnt seem too practicle. I know architects work closely with engineers, so maybe the possibility is still wide open in the distant future.
thanks again!
Player_One 09-14-2005, 01:27 AM Just get the 2.4L and boost it yourself. :)
Cobal-lution 09-14-2005, 02:42 AM Just get the 2.4L and boost it yourself. :)
Looking for info, who makes a Turbo kit for the 2.4. Just drove one today, and thinking seriously on getting it. But must have a Turbo. I figured someone would come out with one, but it would be nice to hear there already is one.
Thanks

no i'm pretty sure you'd have to swap the whole hub off an SS and then there's the issue w/ ss's being rear disk so that'd be alot of work for just stock wheels. It'd be cheaper to just find some nice aftermarket wheels that fit the four lug.
djpatrick35 09-14-2005, 04:23 PM Hmm... Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. I guess I'll stick with the crap wheels until I get the 2.4... Damn it! Okay... 6 months and counting!
