Cops say that my license plate light is illegal!

Got pulled over Monday night on my way home from bowling. When he pulled me over I was like wtf did I do now. He said the reason why he pulled me over was because of my license plate light. Then proceed to tell me that I need to return it back to stock and that if he was a state cop he would have written me up. So all in all I got a verbal warning. I am not going to do anything to it cause I really like the way it looks. Tell me what you guys think. It is an LED light, same with the reverse lights.

yah, for some reason, some (not all) cops don't have the ability to distinguish white from blue...

It's obviously bright enough, the problem is that maybe it's too bright? Maybe it's illegal because other drivers may think you're backing up or something? Hard to tell from a picture. At least he let you off w/ a warning. If it was me, I would have gotten a ticket and the cop would have been a total dick. That's my luck.

It is white and I don't know if he thought it was a neon light or what. The light does stick out a bit so I need to adjust it a little bit. I will post a link later to show you what the light looks like.

here is the link to the light: http://frickinbrite.com/catalog/prod...roducts_id=242

stealthy1ss- Can you tell me the bulb # for the reverse lights? I just tinted my taillights and now need a brighter light for the reverse.

921's You should use the ones in the link. Just need to customize the reverse lights a little. Here are the ones that I have but they don't fit to well. They need to be in the right position to work and are a pain.

http://frickinbrite.com/catalog/prod...roducts_id=257 Mine are white not blue. Like I said before it is hard to see when backing up because of the way that they reflect off the ground.

What all is involved in making those lights work? I don't want to get into something that is going to be over my head.

It's to bright and it obstructs the letters on the plate. He most likely told you that because you can not clearly read your plate. I don't know the in the picture from that distance you cant really see anything but the light. Would be interesting to find out why he said it was not legal. But my hunch would be the brightness of it.

You will have to take the assembly apart and find a way to fasten it to the assembly w/screws or something.

It really isn't that bright. You can read my plate clearly. I think he was bored and saw me and pulled me over to see if he could write me up for something.

The bulb can be illegal if it is not D.O.T approved. Just cause the bulb is stamped DOT does not mean it complies with the standards. If the bulb causes either a discomfort glare (ie.. discomfort, annoyance, fatigue, and pain) or disability glare (which is the reduction of visiblity) the officer could and might just write you a ticket. Even though you like the way it looks think about the guy riding behind you and how he feels. And to make your life easier just change it back.
It does look good buy the way. But it does seem a little brite.

The picture makes it appear to be really bright but it is not.

I second that. It's guys like this that make my job fun. If guys like him only know how easy it is to have your car taking away from you during a traffic stop, they might act a little differently.

Can you move the light up into the bumber a little? It might change the appearence just enough.

This is easy to sovle! Just go to a state police station and A S K T H E M !! When you go in and ask and have a trooper come look and if he says nope won't do it's too bright or too whatever say thank you I wanted to check so I don't have any problems. Cops respect you taking the time to double check and are 98% of the time very cool when it comes to them checking out your car. If not put a stock one back in. If he says (and I think he would) that its fine then your golden! Just remember his name so if you get stopped again you can say "Well trooper _______ looked at it and said it was ok, heres his card" Then they can't say POOP to you.

Just go ask.

Ummm.... that makes no sence. If car "A" has it and its legal for it then car "B" can have it and be legal too. Remember cops can't tell every single option for every single car built so vehicular laws are made to be blanket so the cops don't have to guess whats ok for one car and not for another.

If a stock Lexus has the same lighting then his is most certainly legal. But like I said just ask a trooper!
