I just wanted to let everybody know that I got my catch can/ air-oil seperator installed last night. I will create a how-to thread, but here is a picture of the finished product.

Nice! This can on the SC models is a good idea. Too bad the LS,LT, and SS/NA have the tube forward -- can't make a nice install without running houses all over the place like you can with the SC.

When the s/c is not creating boost, it is creating a vacuum. When the s/c is under vacuum, it is sucking dirty oily air into the s/c. This catch can stops that. Any water or oil that is in the air will get filtered out by the cath can so the s/c is receiving only pure air. Dirty oily air causes the s/c to wear out prematuerly. There is no performance gain by doing this. I simply am protecting my s/c and prolonging its lifespan by doing this.

 

The tube coming out of the valve cover serves 2 purposes. It lets filtered air in from the intake so the engine can remove crankcase gases via the PCV tube in the intake at idle and normal driving. When you are driving "spirited" the flow is reversed and crankcase gases go through the tube into the intake to be burned. Some oil can get into the throttle body this way and "DIRTY" up the TB -- the catch can "catches" this oil to keep the intake clean.

 

i have a bwoody cath can for sale if anyone wants it it brand new, black, has the fittings you just need to buy the hoses.. (just whoreing around lol) i need to sell off my stuff for the turbo

I bought mine from Jegs. You have to buy your own fittings though. The kit only comes with one. I will do a how-to this weekend.

There is really no need for this in an n/a car that's in good shape as they won't get blow bye and clean air is being pulled in through that tube and the gases exited via the pcv vavle tube.

 

Yeah. The catch can is not needed on a normally aspirated car really.

Nice, I'm thinking thats what I need. I'm getting a rebuild on my S/C done next week through warranty bc it started knocking its ass off (sounds like a box of rocks). So after that; I'll definately be investing in a catch can to prevent this 2nd time around!

 

I've said this before but I'll mention it again if anyone didn't see it. You don't have to spend lots of $$ on a catch can. You can go to a local autoparts store and buy a carburated fuel filter (the glass ones with the metal ends), and remove the filter. Install it inline like the store bought "catch cans" but and it'll do the same. If you want a different look go to something like home depot and buy a water/air seperator for an air compressor and do the same as above. Less then $10 and you have a catch can.

Tell this to the GTO guys, lots and lots of people are installing these even on stock engines, it depends on the type of engine and not really if its N/A or FI

 

Why would anyone buy one for $40 when you can buy the same thing for less then $10. It's not a high impact part that will be making boost or anything. All it does is catch some excess oil. The ones off the air compressors even look the same as those others. Since we've been doing this same thing for years around here with turbo cars it's caught on with the filters being used. It just makes sense. If you want to spend $$ on the same thing because "it's made for it" be my guest. I'll save that extra money and get a tank of gas.

Sure I'll tell it to the gto guys. If they aren't getting blow bye they don't need it. It's amazing how many people don't understand how a PCV system works. That's like me saying an electric supercharger doesn't work and someone saying to tell that to the honda guys because they use them all the time

I don't mind. I just feel good whenever I purchase something from Jegs. I started to wonder if I could have just bought one for an air compressor, but I just went with my gut instinct and bought it from Jegs.

I've been working on cars for years along with my 3 brothers. It just comes as second nature to me to make something else work, or to rig up something. I even make my own alcohol kits. I tried to make it a "how to" like a week or 2 ago but haven't seen it up yet. If you don't feel comfortable then just go buy one. I'll be putting one on my car, maybe this weekend or the next. I'll put a pic or 2 up for you guys then. If not then I'll to my buddies house cause he has the air compressor one on his talon and snap a pic of his.

 

I'm in the same boat. I made my own intercooler sprayer for my srt-4 when I had it. It was alot cheaper, nicer looks, and more fun that the CRY o2 kit! I wish i took pictures of it before I sold my car. Because I got nothing but compliments on it!
