Took my 2.0 ss/sc car in today for engine noises

I took my car in today because I noticed that my engine ticking noises where getting louder and louder. They set me up with a brand new silverado truck. Which by the way is a really nice truck!! I might trade my car in for one of those if I have anymore issues with it. But, I got a call today and they said it was something to do with the Timing Chain, and that they need to pull the front cover to see what is going on. They called GM about it and they said since my car only has 2500 miles on it they want to send a GM specialists to the shop and look at what might have caused the failure because they said that they had failures in the past but fixed the problem and my car should have been fine. So, they said they might keep my car for possibly two weeks. I am just happy GM stands behind warranty and care for once!!

Another funny story was that another car like mine was in there a couple of weeks ago for a slipping clutch with around 3000 miles on it, they said it was some kid that brought it in. They were going to cover the car under warranty but they noticed the tires were bald, so they refused the warranty. Well the lady then told me she said some of the technicians went to our local 1/4 mile track that very next day and the car was out there with the slipping clutch racing down the drag strip. I swear some people are just plain stupid. Let's go race a car with a clutch that slips!!!

glad to hear they are fixing it for you, but sorry about your troubles.
Mine used to tick, even after the car was turned off ... and no CEL..but then it stopped @ like 3,000 miles. I never took it in for that.. but havent had any problems since then.

Is that something that is just typical or what?? You think it will happen again in the future? I haven't drove the car hard or anything. I been really nice to it. I am trying to make this one last.

I do believe its a problem, but not often when the car isn't driven hard. Of course you never know with a Balt.

Was it a ticking sound that only happened at idle because I get that from time to time. if I rev above 1000 rpms it goes away. You think that might be the same thing?

sounds like it, but mine was really loud!! You could crack the window and sit there at idle and here it plain as day.

I can hear it with the windows up or down and it definitely sounds like it's comming from the engine compartment under the center of the car. As best I can tell.

Well I got a call from the dealership today they said the Timing Tensioner is bad and that they are going to put a new tensioner on and a new belt. Said it is an easy fix. Just didn't sound like it before they started.

Could you better explain your problem. I can't even understand what you're saying is happening. It makes the sound after you let go of the clutch? Do you mean right after and then it stops, or the sound continues? Give more detail and use good grammar.

I'm not trying to be rude at all, it's just hard to understand what you're talking about especially since this thread is about the timing chain tensioner.

haha, yeah that could be. are you shifting at low rpms? cuz if you are lugging the engine it will make some shitty noises like that. try reving it higher before shifting, for instance around 3-4k. that may help. otherwise, i would say you ahve some further issues. say if you have been burning out a lot, and get a lot of wheel hop as these cars are prone to doing, then you could have f'd something up in the front end and it will make some funk ass noise lol...for instance the cv joint/shaft...good luck

There's a secret TSB on the front end noise. It's the timing chain and gears. GM didn't use tempered chains in a lot of ecotecs and it will cause the timing to have a loud ticking noise and possible metal shavings on the drain plug magnet.

It happened to mine and I had it replaced. It fixed the noise.

There's a post I made earlier on the TSB.

edit: I mean SECRET by GM is not making this TSB viewable for dealerships. It is only given to the ones who call in to GM TAC and mention those exact troubles.

where is the number to call GM for this issue and or where is the service bullitin. My car goes in on tuesday and I am sure this is the f-in issue. Annoying but they are already telling me " nah its probably not the chain " so i want to walk in there with a bullitin of some kind.
