TURBO thoughts (auto + SAI)
TURBO thoughts (auto + SAI)
We've waited so long for the turbo kit and its finally here. I can't believe it. I can't wait to smoke a SS S/C =)
I just got off the phone with SCT and they said they will be releasing the details on the tunning solutions they are providing very shortly. They said the kit does not provide a solution for the automatic at this time. They advised me to wait for the official information to be released regarding the SAI as well. Many people have been contacting them wanting to know about the SAI. They said some creative fabrication could be used to keep the SAI on the car. They could not tell me if we can delete the SAI either.
So my goal is to turbo with the automatic but I'm pretty concerned I won't be able to find someone to tune the tranny. I want to be able to put this kit on my car in my dad's shop and be able to drive down the highway and get it into a decent shop some 400KMs away from here. I hope a base automatic tune can be provided so they car can safely drive down the road.
So what upgrades should I make for this installation?
-Transmission cooler
-Torque converter
Should I upgrade the rods? lifters?
Hurray, good bye $3000 dollars and hello turbo kit!

I wouldn't hold your breath about smoking a plethora of SS/SCs.
Remember that THEIR engine is designed for boost, yours isn't. If it's a GOOD turbo kit, it should put you about even "statistically speaking" with a stock SS/SC, but only for straight line racing. They'll still out handle your car.
If they have stage kits on the car they'll still roast you, but I guarantee they'll come back and ask you WTF you have done to your LS
edit. I don't think tuning is available yet for the 2.2l motor.

No tuning available... yet. Check out the sticky thread in this section about SAI. Mr goodwrench seems to have come up with a fix. He has it on his manual and says it will work on an auto. Halfcent is doing some testing on it as well as some other things. I would definitely suggest a tranny cooler if you plan on doing some real racing with it. The launch is gonna build up a lot of heat, and even if not... its a good thing to help the life of your transmission. I'd also suggest picking up the CPP Bushing for the transmission mounts. Keep us updates, would love to see how this turns out.
If he is an 05-06 he does have tuning now.
Nothing lame about turboing his car. It sounds like alot of fun and if the end result is that he can take an SS/SC at the track, awesome.
It's not all about the final $ tag either. He may spend $14k on an LS, and another $4k on turbo mods. So he's now sitting about $5000 less on the bill, but he has NO vehicle warranty anymore, and he's running a turbo that his engine wasn't designed for, that could potentially blow all four pistons through his block next week.
In addition, aftermarket blower stage kits are few and far between. GM is already on Stage 3 with the SS/SC, and it's still under warranty

haha......... I posted smoking just for ****. I could care less about racing a fellow Cobalt driver. Power to the supercharged boys. It will be fun to line a fully tuned turbo 2.2L up against a fully tuned 2.0 S/C and see how they do. Theres no grudge matches there. Chevy power side by side with a little bit of Eaton and Garrett flavour in the air.
I'm concerned about the SAI. I'm interested to hear what Mr. Goodwrench has come up with. If we can delete it from the ECM we will be all set for the application.
After reading that I thought. Well I would be so concerned if I bought an LS for $14k. If I had a warranty and was worried about a warranty, and a wanted a SS/SC in the first place.
But I'm not and I'm happily getting a turbo. I owe $0 for my car. It has been rebuilt with love from the bone yard.
