I recently took delivery of a new 2006 G6 with the LE5 engine. So far, I have been driving a mix of city the highway driving. Is a careful break-in period for modern engines a necessity? I happened upon this internet link to a guy who puts forward a case for running the engine in a methodical and more aggressive manner to break-in an engine. Any thoughts?

well your are varying the speeds at which the engine is operating--thats good. The owners
manual for the Coblat says do that for 500 miles (800kms).

I limited the rpms to 4500 and did not give it more then half throttle for that period. After that I gradually drove it harder. Redlined about 2000kms. It was hard to do and took some discipline! I almost always give the car 30sec to a minute to warm up if its been sitting over night too.

I've got about 1200 miles on mine and am just now starting to drive her in what I would call my "normal" style... I took it easy for the first 1000... kept it below 5000 RPM, only went on the interstate once....

If you read your manual it'll be in there.

Do the following for the first 500 miles.

Alter the speed/RPM and keep it at 65mph or lower.
Don't use the clutch to slow down, use only the brakes.
NO wide open throttle starts.

Thank you to all for the responses. Will keep up the go-it easy approach for another few hundred miles.

the first few hundred miles you gotta kinda go easy for the bearings

but you gotta drive hard to break in the rings

alot depends on who you talk to , me i go with the drive it like you stole it theroy

This seems to be the more generally accepted procedure these days

with regards to avro206 "30 second warmup"

what we are after on "warmup" is to get oil circulating to elimate dry running

and to bring the engine up to operating temp. to stabalize dimensions

that said,

when the engine indicates normal oil pressure start moderate driving

this will help circulate oil to the top end and throughout the engine

continue moderate driving until normal operating temp. is reached

drive as usual - find someone to pick on

I didn't say that very well. I didn't really mean "warm up"---I know then engine is not going to reach operating temp in 30 sec. I sort of meant what you said.

I'm not very clear either - I'm referring to the "sit and wait" philosphy NOT GOOD

What have you got done to the 400 in the 'bird?
My collection has been reduced to a ; '68 HO 350 , '65 389 , '69 428 , mid '70s 455
428 going in '31 Ford Model A P/U Gasser , 670 heads mild port unshroud intakes, RA IV cam , RPM intake , Q-Jet , 400 THM , 9" 35 spline 3:70 PROJECT IN PROCESS
I know this isn't a Pontiac site so if you like respond private as to not "pollute" this thread

pretty much you want the motor to start to build up some heat before your playing with it

it doesnt take long for heat transfer from the combustion to warm things up

also sitting with the motor at low rpm , while its cold isnt good either because the extra fuel causes the oil to get washed off the cylinders , so you dont wanna sit for 5-10 minutes either

usually a minute or 2 is good

Break in is very important on the Evo. Break it in correctly and you'll have no oil usage...neglect the break in period and put a quart in every couple of weeks. I would imagine that most motors are that way. I'll be erring on the side of caution...
