2.0 Turbo and six speed in a few years?

I was watching car and driver today when i saw a "spyshot" of an upcoming pontiac solstice. Instead of the 2.4L N/A ecotec, it was rumored to have a 2.0 TURBO ecotec and a six speed manual transmission to produce 250 hp!! I was wondering if this engine would ever have a chance to make it into the cobalt SS? The more i though abuot it the more it seemed like it would never happen though. What are your thoughts? And would anyone think abuot making a swap if it was offered as a crate engine through Gm Goodwrench parts? since it is most liekly the same block im sure a swap wouldn't be too hard. Comments are welcome!

Well the tranny, no, its a RWD transmission. THe engine maybe but it would have to be modified to fit in FWD form, and it might not even be added to the Solstice GT..its rumored to possibly get the 2.0SC.

They are currently producing the 2006 Solstice's with a turbo in them right now, and the first model year of an automatic transmission as well.

The delay on them is because they are having trouble getting the hood to fit right.

I don't think there will be changes. I would expect the 6-speed and Turbo (if it happens) to be only on the Solstice and its twin the Saturn Sky. Last I heard, GM had cancelled plans to do a Turbo in it, and it was simply getting the 2.0L Supercharged in the car (the same LSJ the CObalt has).

Also, remembert that the Chevy HHR gets our 205HP 2.0L Supercharged LSJ next year with the Cobalt SS-SC's 5-speed. Thus the powertrain (LSJ & F35 5-speed) will be shared with the Saturn Ion Redline, Cobalt SS-SC, Chevy HHR, and possibly the Solstice/Sky.

Thus, I feel it is very unlikely the Cobalt SS-SC will get an engine or transmission change. Besides, it already has a great engine and transmission.

As the old adage goes: Dont fix it if it ain't broken!!!

Well the HHR shares the same platform as the Cobalt, while the Solstice doesn't.

They are NOT producing the Solstice GT yet because for one, you can't order it, two the official press release hasn't been announced giving the specs, and three because the current model year isn't over with for the solstice.

There are many pics of a turbo solstice, but GM has also said it will get the LSJ instead..so it could be either one at this point, but you won't see the transmissions carry over to the Cobalt.

drop the crack pipe dude! There is no forced induction Solstice in production now. For 2007 we'll see something---s/c or turbo. The first batch were 5 speed manuals only---I have heard thje automatic is in early 06.

the solstice gt (or whatever combination of letters they put on the back) will be a 2.0 turbo, that has been confirmed. i highly doubt that they would switch in a new engine in the middle of a model run but for the next gen, the sky is the limit. i know that gm is redoing the cobalt the same time as the ION in 2008 (yes that soon) and the next gen cars should be at dealers sometime in 07. this is rapidly sneaking up on us.

if they produce the 2.0 turbo in the Solstice, they'll take it from the Vauxhall/Opel Astra VXR/GTC which is 2.0 turbo'd JSJ.

Automatic transmission will not be available until the begining of 2006.
The rumored Turbocharged version is rumored to come out towards the end of 2006 as a 2007 model. The only Solstices in production right now use the LE5 engine and the 5-speed Aisin.

Now there might be cars in development using a more advanced engine, but there are absolutely none in production at this time. You can't even order or pre-order a more powerful version at this time either.

Everything right now is completely rumor is the problem. We're hoping that at NAIAS06 we'll get some official information about the Solstice GXP/Sky RL. The only thing we know for sure is that from looking at the pictures some sort of Turbocharged Solstice is in testing. It does not mean it will exist, but it's a good chance it will.

That article was based of very dated info . The turbo is still a go for the Kappa twins . As far as the Cobalt SS is concerned , if GM is not cordial publically about its future ....watch for news on the Ion replacement which is supposed to be here in 2007 as a 2008 . It is the Opel Astra , the VXR model is currently powered by a 2.0 turbocharged ecotec with a 6-speed trans . GM has not expanded SC development with the ecotec engines , any new development has utilized a Turbo Putting the SC engine in the HHR would cost GM virtually nothing , even if it were for one or 2 years . All certification for the 2.0SC with the saab 5speed is already done for the Delta chassis . What would throw a flag for me , and make me think the SC engine is gonna stay awhile , is if GM certified a Auto trans for the 2.0 SC so it could offer a auto in the HHR ( SS? )

Just go to the website.....you cannot "build one" there is no mention of it. Talk to a dealer. You were obviously talking to some one who has no clue what they are talking about. 2007 is the year.

as far as i know the s/c cobalts were only gonna be a few year run

when gm released the info on the vaxual lightning , it said it was a 2.2 s/c , with a 6spd , and some people think becuase gm released info on it the US twins will not get the turbo most all of us have seen pics of

and i highly doubt a s/c will make it in the twins , no one has pics of a s/c'd solstice/sky/lightning

but there is a rumor of a solstice here in az with a turbo running around

I don't think GM likes turbo's.... I mean, how many cars have they produced with them? How many with superchargers?

Don't for get the Sunbird GT. They had a 2.0L 165hp Turbo back in the 80's. And diesels have had turbos for a long time.

Eaton superchargers are very easy to get to pass emissions in Cali. One of the reasons why they like them so much.

Besides the universally known GNX there were several turbo pontiacs back in the 80's... GM has plenty of experience with turbocharging. I think they've gone with superchargers recently b/c they're cheaper.

You cant count the Saab really, they were doing the turbo thing way before GM joined with them.
