There are so many variables that go into how much power a car makes besides displacement and how many cams. The size of the cam(s), the size of the valve(s), how many valves, the size of the intake manifold(s), how well air flows through all of the above, the size of the throttle body, and most importantly tuning.

Oh, good call on gearing and compression, forgot those. Ugh vtec, granted the 2.4L is the only cobalt with it, its just a fancy way of saying variable valve timing.

Instead of heaving one cam opening and closing both the intake and exhaust valves(SOHC), there is one cam for each set of intake and exhaust(DOHC)

check out How Stuff Works.com, and there should be a lot of information on there, with even some flash animation showing how it works.

You have overhead valve, and overhead cam....

Definatly! Before I bought the cam for my camaro I did so much research on camshafts and how they work and that was a very good site.

HOT ROD magazine, and CAR CRAFT are also pretty good sources. They have a lot of technical articles that detail how many aspects of internal combustion engines work, etc. They have archives on their websites, that can explain a lot.

As always, your best bet is to research the **** out of something via whatever sources are available to you if you really want to know.....
