View Full Version : New 17" rims on my SS/SC
WickedSS2005 10-20-2005, 12:35 PM I ordered a set of 17" Sport Edition F2's from TireRack.com with Avon Tech M550 A/S rubber in 225/50/17. After they arrived I was afraid the 225 tires would rub but after the 150 miles I put on them last night there is no rub. Personally I think the Avon's are better than the Pirelli's for comfort. There was a noticable difference in ride quality and road noise for the better. I suck at posting pics so you'll have to click the link unless someone will post them in the thread for me ;) Pics of my rims (http://www.cobaltss.net/gallery/showimage.php?i=1858)
And now a ink to the tire Avon Tech M550 A/S (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Avon&tireModel=Tech+M550+A%2FS&partnum=25WR7M550&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes&place=0)
nice ride man, how much do those 17's weigh?
wikkymaster 10-20-2005, 12:43 PM they look nice, your tint looks really good too
WickedSS2005 10-20-2005, 12:43 PM To be honest, I'm not sure. They do weigh a lil more than the Stockers because the tiree came mounted it might be the tire too. All in al though, I'd say mybe a 3-5lb difference tops, and that only from lifting the two.
Sweet! I like those rims.
R33P3R007 10-20-2005, 01:26 PM how much?
MarcS 10-20-2005, 01:34 PM how much?

The rims were $88 each on tirerack. And the Avon tires were $118/each. total w/ shipping was $891.55 to Ohio. Free mounting/balance/lugnuts. The tires ROCK guys. So far w/ roughly 200 mi they are very comfortable and handle very well. The out rate the pirelli's we got stock. Go figure  . I'm taking a trip this weekend which will put me at about 500 mi total on these tires, I'll let you all knwo my opinion on long trips.
One bad thing I noticed is very minimal steering wheel shake at around 75-80mph it evens out after a lil while tho.
silverSS 10-20-2005, 03:23 PM dam those look really nice :thumb:
DC52NV 10-20-2005, 04:25 PM nice set of wheels you got there. :)
jtohio4002 10-20-2005, 04:34 PM I think that i might have to disagree with the choice of those wheels but hey not everyone has to like them. I went with the 18 ADR so-7 on my arrival blue no pics b/c i have no tires yet still deciding.
06black 10-20-2005, 04:40 PM nice lookin set up man but do they handle as good as the stock set up

Actually, they handle noticably better. I attribute that to the thicker rubber. 225 isn't THAT much wider, but it is wider. Love them. I'm at work at the moment, so I will see how the tires hold in wet pavement as it is raining  I hate rain and snow

215/45 SERIES TIRE IS WIDER THAN A 225/50 SERIES TIRE FYI. It's called aspect ratio.

Huh, well that would make sense, but they are wider. I layed the stock tire/rim next to the new ones and they are wider by about 1/2 an inch or so. No I didn't measure them to be exact. Atleast off the car they are wider. They also stick out a lil further on the sides. I dunno what's the reasoning but they are wider, somehow.
EDIT: After looking at the page again, could it be that the new rim is a 17" and the stock is 18"??
05EBPursuit 10-20-2005, 11:39 PM Aspect ratio has to do with the section height, not width.
225 is wider than 215.
But the stock 215s would be lower profile, which MAY come better handling...

philco_3 10-20-2005, 11:48 PM good choice on wheels. nice to know that companies are finally making wheels for the 5x110 bolt pattern.
WickedSS2005 10-21-2005, 01:31 AM For al those interested in 16's, 17, or 18's. Go to Tirerack .com and doa winter wheel/tire search. It will let you choose from thsoe sizes, and most of the normal rim seach on TireRack don't show ALL that fit....weird, very weird

Umm... here try this URL
Avon Tech M500 Spec Link (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp?make=Avon&model=Tech+M500&partnum=25WR7M500&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes&place=4)
You will notice that 225/50/17 have a tread width of 8.3", then scroll down to 215/45/17 which have a tread width of 7.9"

Also search for Saturn L-series cars, those rims all fit ours or search for the newer Saab 9-3 or 9-5 those also fit and there are some nice 17" BBS wheels that show up.
As far as the winter tires, TireRack does not show the correct size, at least not for the 16" size. I know 16" tires should be 205/60-16 not 215/60-16. 17" I think is supposed to be 215/50-17, I don't know what they show as the standard size though.
hardtocope 11-22-2005, 11:19 AM what offset did you pick for your wheel?
