When an Ion sedan goes down a 15ft embankment at 50mph

Here's some pix of my little cousin's car. She either missed a turn or swerved or something and went down an embankment front first. She broke her leg, ankle, punctured a lung and knocked out most of her teeth, not to mention a head injury. She survived though.
Note: Her teeth were broken on the steering shaft when the steering wheel broke off....yes BROKE OFF.
Some of you may have seen me in TN with my Yellow 06 ss/sc with MI plates back in May when I went to see her, right after it happened. She still can barely walk.

Through it or under it? The engine is supposed to be designed to drop out of the bottom of the car during serious front end collisions there by making sure it doesn't go into the cabin of the car.
Thats very strage it went into the cabin you may want to see if she is entiled to any damages from GM for the failure.

I never saw the actual car but there was no engine laying around at the scene. far as i know, it went through and down.
They are considering a suit with GM because of the steering wheel breaking like that, problem is her dad (my uncle) is retired from Saturn.
We do know that there was no alcohol or drugs involved. We also know that she was conscious enough to be able to reach her cell phone and call her boyfriend for help. It also just so happens that her brother, my other cousin (the guy with the red GMC), is a volunteer firefighter and heard the call and was the 1st on the scene.
Those pics don't do all the justice but she had a door panel that blew completely off from the impact.
CobaltVenomSS....PM me if you think you might know her.

Retire GM or not get a lawyer or at the very least talk to one about your options. If her steering wheel fell off others could as well causing others to be hurt or killed. And are you sure the wheel came off after the accident, or was it the casue of the accident? Steering wheel comes off in your hands, you can't steer. Something to consider.
I wouldn't exactly complain about that...it did what it was supposed to do. I would MUCH rather prefer a mystery missing engine somewhere than it come through the firewall and crush me.
Sad story. but with a good ending.
Glad she's gonna be ok.
When I was about her age, I missed a turn on a country road (from inexperience in that area and having been momentarily distracted by the passenger - and not from speeding).
I was driving a '69 Nova SS, went down a SMALL embankment (just 10ft. or so) and all 4 of us who were inside just walked away with minor scrapes/bruises.
We lucked out ...

Those things are TANKS compared to an ION.
Hope she has a speedy recovery!
